Scholarship $$S per year

12/26 Hello, this is my app tracker. Soft factors noted below:

- 10 years work experience
- Currently negotiate contracts for large pharma company (Manager level)
- Summer internships for large corporations through college
- Worked full-time during college
- Own a food service management company

I'm hoping for good news from either RU Camden or Temple, which are the closest schools to home.

***I know that, for most of these schools, this will be a long-shot. I am hoping that something works in my favor this cycle***

I only ranked the schools that I really would consider attending without a scholarship, i.e., the schools I can resonably drive to after work.

1/4 Opened mail this weekend. Received fee waiver from DePaul, University of Kentucky and Penn State (not sure if this really counts as a fee waiver yet).

1/7 Realized that most of my emails were sent to my 'Junk Mail' folder. Univ. of Georgia, Quinnipiac and Univ. of Cincinnati fee waivers received via email. Completed applications today. Also received email - complete at RU - Newark.

I am officially done with applications - no money left to be spent on this.

Got home and found RU Camden return mail with payment confirmation.

1/8 Starting to get that sinking feeling like this cycle is not gonna work out the way I think it is. I recently learned that Seton Hall Law is less than 0.1 miles from Newark Penn Station. I will upgrade SHU on my list of choices based on convenience. I would rather take the train in to Newark than drive my car into Philly.

I decided not to pay either Whitter or CUNY Law application fees due to budget constraints, effectively withdrawing my application. Either way, I would probably not attend either school if I got in.

1/9 Still incomplete at Brooklyn. If they will not proceed without a Dean's Cert, then I'm not moving forward with the app. Who the heck even knows who the dean is? I've been out of school since the 90's!

1/15 Complete at RU Camden via SASE sent with certification letter.

1/16 Just called RU Newark and learned of their shuttle service to Newark Penn Station after class. Also, their class schedule for 1L is 6p - 8p M-Th. Since in-state tuition makes RU the most cost-effective, I have adjusted my preferences.

Has anyone been rejected via status checker? Wow...out at UGA.

1/17 Decided to rank my choices by TLS rank as well - because I have nothing to do at my in-laws this morning.

1/18 WOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! IN AT RU NEWARK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I've calmed down. I'm still claiming this as a miracle.

1/20 Completed FAFSA application today - my company should foot the bill, but who's paying for this up-front! So glad total bill=$7,500 per semester.

1/22 Removed Villanova from my preferences - no PT program.

1/30 Just in case I thought that RU Newark was not a miracle - here comes a white envelope from George Mason. Not on the same level, but I'm secretly sad...

1/31 In the mail today - rejection from Seton Hall.

2/2 Completed my request for tuition reimbursement for RU Newark. Estimating the bill at $8,275 per semester for 2009/10. In this economy nothing can be taken for granted, especially my company paying for law school. Budgets have been cut - I'm crossing my fingers!

So, with the latest rejection I am sending my seat deposit to RU Newark asap!!! It will help me deal with the pending 1-22 result.

2/4 Still waiting...but my boss did sign off on the tuition reimbursement request. Now they have to determine which budget will be dinged...

2/5 Now I feel validated...accepted to Widener! I have been checking my status online twice a day for the last three weeks...

2/6 ...and quickly disappointed. Dinged by DePaul.

2/10 Still checking my status on every available site - nothing!

Then my wife called and said there was a large envelope from Creighton!

2/11 Denied via status checker at Drexel

I began thinking today, why didn't someone tell me that life didn't end after high school? If I had known that law school was in my future I would have put the same effort into undergrad work as high school work. Anyway, so long ago...

2/12 Was Rutgers a miracle? After my latest rejection from Penn State, I am beginning to believe.

2/13 Angry at the rejection from NY Law - spoiled my drive to the in-laws

2/17 UMN status changed to 'decision letter sent' as of 2/13. Anticipating a ding in the mail by tomorrow.

2/18 Finally received an 'app complete' email from Quinnipiac

2/19 W/L from STL. Not returning the letter, though.

2/23 Got three letters today from Pace, UMN and Cincinnati. Strange, though, as UMN said I could transfer-in after 1L. Anyone else get that in their letter?

2/27 No news from the remaining 8, but I received my financial aid letter from RU...nice...at least I know I will be attending school in the fall.

3/2 Interesting acceptance letter from Quinnipiac that just put them in the running to become America's Next Top Model. $25k a year is nothing to sneeze at - my first scholarship offer!

But I was waitlisted at Willamette, which is puzzling. No complaints, though...

3/5 When I complain, things happen. Therefore, I'll complain. What the heck is taking RU Camden and Temple this long to review my app and send me a decision? The worst part of this process has been the waiting.

In other exciting news, I received a call from Adam Messner at Akron verifying my graduation date. He promised a decision by next week. Not exactly what I complained about...

3/9 I will wait for you Cardozo, I will wait! What a surprise!

Akron called to invite me to an admitted students' day this weekend, so I guess I'm in!

3/11 Acceptance and scholarship email from Akron. I am honored that anyone would consider me for a scholarship!

3/12 Called Temple - apparently they're reviewing my app as we speak! I dunno...

3/13 Called Rutgers - just trying to keep things moving. File is with admissions committee.

Cycle almost complete with letter from W&L.

3/16 ...drip...drip...drip...drip...waiting on my final three responses.

3/19 Wow...wow...wow...wow...wow! ACCEPTED at Temple!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

I've calmed down...Rutgers or Temple? Any thoughts?

Thanks to soldiva I determined that RU costs $19k vs. $24k for Temple, including commuting costs, fees and books. I can take the R3 from West Trenton to Temple in 50 minutes for about $78/mo. The trip to Newark (55 - 74 mins) will cost me $259/mo. I plan to attend the Open House at Temple this weekend.

btw, I attended an admitted students' tour at RU Newark last week and was not impressed. The campus is nice but the class (Criminal Law) was disappointing. The students were unprepared and the professor didn't seem to be bothered by that. I'm sure I would like the same grace when I'm in class; but where's the challenge? Is it easier for evening students than day?

3/20 I received a cryptic email from RU Camden regarding either taking another entrance exam (GRE, GMAT), enrolling in the Jump Start program, or both. What the heck does that mean? Am I in? Am I out? I don't know! I sent an email to Dean Andrews - I will wait on the official letter...

4/1 WL at Villanova. Could not attend anyway as they do not have a PT program.

Received confirmation of deposit via email from Rutgers. Will also pay Temple deposit by April 15.

4/15 Received confirmation of deposit via email from Temple.

4/27 Received call from RU Camden admissions office. No need to take additional extrance exam. I'm in!!! Now I'm really not sure what to do, but I will say that RU Newark is probably a distant 3rd and I should officially withraw soon.

6/27 Faxed withdrawal letters to bnoth Rutgers campuses. Attending Temple in the fall. I'm really excited to get started, but I'm also hesitant as I have an 8 week old baby and a job to think about at the same time.

***I believe that the key to my acceptances was the amount of time between my UGPA and my LSAT***

Good luck to you too!

Why not CUNY?

Good luck to you, but why not throw an app to CUNY?

I guess...
Thursday, July 03 2008 at 08:00 PM

...but I could read on the train, rather than drive.

Rutgers Camden
Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

Hello. I actually applied last year to Rutgers, but decided against it this year. I've already gotten into Drexel with $, so it would be cheaper than out-of-state tution at Rutgers. Additionally, Drexel and Temple(my first choice) are closer. In fact, Temple has a shuttle bus that goes from my town in the suburbs right to the main campus where the LS is. I wouldn't have to take the train OR drive. Good luck in all of your applications and on getting in to your top choices!

I have a huge gripe with the dean's cert! What a bunch of BS. Why do I need someone that wasn't even at the school when I was there to confirm what my transcripts already show. I graduated how many ways does it need to be said, right? It's cool that you live in a commutable distance to some good schools. I just wish Rutgers, Temple and Seton would get on the ball and start handing out some letters. Good luck to you. Don't let the bureaucratic red tape get to you.

Good luck!

Hope you get into the school(s) of your choice. U. of Georgia was pretty fast with their decision. You just sent your app last week!

Congrats
Thursday, August 07 2008 at 08:00 PM

On rutgers! I'm a little jealous. All I get from them are emails to attend things or apply for scholarships that past rutgers students have won. If I get one more email from Anita Walton that isn't a decision I'm going to lose it ! How did you get your decision?

Denied via status checker
Thursday, August 07 2008 at 08:00 PM

U of Chicago and Illinois nth went from decision mailed to denied. Also Temple went to decision mailed and then I was informed that accepted students have an accepted message and rejected ones get a decision made/mailed. So technically I've been rejected via status checker by them too

Status checker
Thursday, August 07 2008 at 08:00 PM

Did you know there was an online status checker for Rutgers-Newark? Not that it matters now. But I just found out about the site today, and that I was accepted. So maybe if there's an admitted students weekend we might see each other there!

Rutgers
Thursday, August 07 2008 at 08:00 PM

I'm going FT, but I still haven't gotten a letter from them yet. Unless I got mail today which I didn't check b/c I wasn't sure if they delivered mail today. But as it stands I still haven't gotten so much as a congrats from the school. So this is the first I've hear of admitted students week. I haven't made up my mind about where I'm going just because I still have lots of apps out. But I definitely prefer RU over Pitt. so if everything else is a rejection then I'll be there

Congrats on Rutgers
Monday, November 10 2008 at 07:00 PM

Hey it looks like we will be part of the same class at Rutgers Newark PT. Did you receive the email from them or just the acceptance package?

Friday, June 06 2008 at 08:00 PM

I've started subsconsciously checking my e-mails and the mailbox for decisions. I might need to see a shrink when this is all said and done. Congratulations on getting into your number 1 choice. You have some interesting soft factors.

Happy to see you got into Rutgers!

Congrats on Rutgers to u too!
Sunday, December 21 2008 at 07:00 PM

For a long time I thought whatever school accepted me would be my top choice :) But now I am really looking into cost of attendance. Sooo for now, Rutgers is at the top of my list. You cant beat in state tuition :)

Wednesday, December 31 2008 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on your acceptances. Our numbers are similar(I would like your 156 over my 150)I also started a business (Investment Real Estate) I got in at Widener today via status check I was checking it every morning before I start work. Good to see the non-traditionals are getting in!

Yes...
Monday, June 12 2006 at 08:00 PM

however applying to schools is a very cost prohibitive process, so I narrowed down my list & applied to 13 schools, which I would be comfortable attending any of them, factoring in the cost of attendance since I owe an enormous amount of $$ in loans from UG...

'Preciate it...

Thanks- it was a major bummer, but I am praying to get off the WL. Congrats on Rutgers, though!

business
Wednesday, December 31 2008 at 07:00 PM

Business is weak the collapse of the majority of the mortgage industry and secondary credit markets has made business difficult. How's business for you?

Sunday, November 30 2008 at 07:00 PM

Hey Well honestly i'm interested in any school in FL, NC or DC that will let me in haha but I finally updated my list on here. Where do you think you're headed?

UMN
Thursday, July 31 2008 at 08:00 PM

Nope, my letter was extremely short and kinda rude but hey....I'm not the strongest applicant and my numbers were way below their averages. If yours did then I would def try next year...Best of luck on your law school endeavors!

Sunday, May 04 2008 at 08:00 PM

A beautiful thing indeed!!! Congrats on your acceptances as well. I wish you all the best!

Thanks!
Friday, October 24 2008 at 08:00 PM

For your vote of confidence, I wish that I shared the same feelings about my cycle :). You have some nice choices up there, congrats!

Thanks
Monday, February 23 2009 at 07:00 PM

I thank you for your optimistic words but I think it is too late in the cycle to throw new apps out there. For T2, I am not sure I would get the consideration needed to overlook my GPA.

Sunday, July 06 2008 at 08:00 PM

I got a phone call from the dean last week. However, I got accepted for the May part-time program...I'm still waitlisted for the fall. If Cardozo is one of your top choices, you should consider contacting them about the May part-time program (if you haven't already). Good luck :)

Sunday, July 06 2008 at 08:00 PM

I just saw that you applied for the part-time program. Oopsies. I need to learn to read profiles before commenting! Anyways, I got waitlisted months ago, so it took awhile for the response. I'm sure you'll hear sooner this last in the process.

You're beneath their median on both counts, so it shouldn't be that puzzling . . .

Choice
Tuesday, March 31 2009 at 08:00 PM

If you plan on practicing in Jersey, go with Camden. Temple however, is a better school.

Temple
Thursday, January 29 2009 at 07:00 PM

The memoir "Barman" by Alex Wellen is a Temple law grad's experience graduating temple, finding work in NYC, and passing the NY bar. It's a page turner, and shows what great opportunities await Temple grads (if they go about it the right way), as well as some of the condescension they get from the yale and harvard folks, and why such condescension is based on pure ignorance. Thought you might be interested.

Sunday, December 16 2007 at 07:00 PM

WOW! Conrats on getting accepted to Rutgers.. I want to go to that school, but my current GPA is a 2.2 :/ I graduate this month with a BA degree in Political Science. Do you think I should even consider applying? I'm scared of investing so much money in taking the LSAT and applications and then to get regected :( I currently don't work and my family makes almost no money.. do you think I still have a shot at getting in ANY law schools?

Temple
Wednesday, August 27 2008 at 08:00 PM

Thanks! I am VERY excited to be attending Temple this fall. I see you have a new baby- congrats! My husband and I also have a new baby. She's 6 weeks old :) See you this fall!
