Extra Curricular Information

LSAT weakest part of my application...All other credentials, including GPA (also in honors program at a competitive school, have a rigorous liberal arts academic feel to my courses, strong "personal" statement, great internships & fellowships, ect.), should deem me competitive for a top 20.

I guess we'll see just how important this LSAT really is...

*Goal: Top 20

*Currently: Top 10 (Berkeley at 6) - - - I DID IT!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--FINAL POST--

I hesitated for a long time before creating my profile for a few reasons. I knew with my LSAT score and the schools I was aiming for that I'd get some harsh criticism...and there's no doubt that I have! But I must say the encouragement/congrats have far outweighed any hatred that was thrown at my wall. So I thank all of you who contributed to that!

However, the reason I ultimately decided to create this profile was to show people (and in particular URMs) that regardless of what people say, what people think, or how people make you feel, you can gain admittance into the top schools regardless of any ONE factor. I can't tell you how many times either a pretentious adviser, a "frenemy," or someone who gets all of their info from these horrible blogs said to me "think again" or "there's no way with your numbers" or "maybe you should wait a year and retake the LSAT." However, I always knew that I could do it. And if you're dealing with the same thing, remember that at the end of the day you have to live the life you've made for yourself, so do what you want to do with it. Who cares what others tell you to do. They're not stuck with your life. I've learned that hunger and grit count for everything in this world!

So, I don't know if you've seen it but there's A LOT of hatefulness on these blogs and such! People can definitely hit you below the belt, which only naturally stings sometimes. However, I've noticed that a lot of it comes from how one does on the "means everything and nothing at the same time"...dun..dun...dun... LSAT. It's so funny when people say things like "you don't deserve it" b/c its based on a premise that is completely shallow. There are SOOOO many other components that go into getting accepted into a law school (if it only came down to the LSAT I'm sure they wouldn't bother asking for anything else). So accept the fact that one can have an incredible personal statement for instance, illustrating that they've been through obstacles that would make the "student that's always had everything in life" crumble, and be as equally promising as someone who did well on a four hour test. The reason I know this is because I've seen it. With a 153, I was accepted to not only one T14 but three. It wasn't a fluke. To everyone who thinks otherwise, believe it or not, we (including those who are in a similar situation) are actually smart human beings with incredible credentials...hard to believe, I know... but TRUE nonetheless! But speaking directly to those people that are part of the collective "we," (everyone who falls into the "hateful category" don't read this part)...know that it's JEALOUSLY at its clearest! Regardless of if people think your profile is fake (or a flame..?.. as someone referred to it on TLS)...know that at the end of the day you're the one that will have the prestige, the experiences, and the degree.

So to my fellow Berkeley students, I can't wait to meet you! To those who achieved similar success, CONGRATULATIONS! What you've done is incredible and 110% deserved! To those who are starting this process, I say grow tough skin, disregard what bitter idiots tell you, and let this profile prove to you that you can do it if you work hard and illustrate to admission committees that you eat people like those bitter idiots for breakfast. Enjoy your food! I wish all of you the best...

Additional info & updates

***02/24/09*** So, my final decision is to attend Berkeley (it might have been obvious in a comparison of my previous posts). I've not received a final decision from Chicago or USC, but an acceptance from either wouldn't make me rethink Berkeley. So it appears I'm done with this very arduous process! I'll have a final posting regarding my thoughts on and lessons learned from all of this very soon. Until then, good luck to everyone who is reading this. Congratulations if you have gotten into your dream school!!! If not, keep your head up and believe that everything truly happens for a reason. You will find success if you work hard and keep fighting.
Update (03/23/09): Out at USC... but it's ok =)
Update (04/28/09): Out at Chicago... and again all ok =)

***02/19/09*** OMG! OMG! OMG!! OMG!!! OMG!!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!! I GOT INTO BERKELEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY NO. 1! THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!! SUNNY CALIFORNIA! AHHHHHHHH!!!! AND THEY ARE PAYING FOR A FLIGHT TO COME VISIT!!! I WOULD WALK ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO GET TO BERKELEY! ... ... and breathe....

***02/07/09*** Whoa! So after not having received a call from Chicago (the norm if accepted) I, for sure, thought I would be waitlisted or rejected... but instead I've been placed on "hold." It says you can send an additional LoR, an updated transcript, or an additional essay (they give you 3 topics to choose from: one on internet regulation, one on payments as a precondition for endorsing a candidate for President, one on a movie/book that resonated with you) which must be submitted by Feb. 27. Hmm... I think I'd go to Virginia over Chicago but I sort of want to get into Chicago now. It's nice to have options, not sure what I'm going to do... BTW, where is USC's notification!!!? It was forever ago that I went complete!

***02/05/09*** Waitlisted at GW... which doesn't beat UVA or Cornell! It's been 4 consecutive days of notifications! Only 3 more places...

***02/04/09*** In at U. Washington!!!! And with it came a very personal message from the Dean of Admissions which definitely makes me feel honored and privileged to have received an invite. Not sure if I'll attend but Seattle would be an incredible place to spend the next three years, so we'll see!! The notices just keep rolling in! Only 4 places to hear back from! WOW... I'm almost done!

***02/03/09*** IN AT CORNELL!!!! My second T14! Can this really be happening???! I received an email this morning from the Dean of Admissions informing me of my acceptance. I cannot believe it! I'm definitely going to visit before I make my final decision on where to attend... but wow... an IVY LEAGUE... this is incredible!!!!!

Later that day... Out at Columbia! Ok, so into one Ivy and out at the next. Not sure why this one doesn't sting as much as I thought it would. I think it's because I would have told you before this all started that I wasn't going to get in anywhere. I seriously cannot believe this has all happened. But now it all lies in Dean Tom's hands. C'mon Berkeley...
Status Checker: Chicago's rejection/waitlist is in the mail...

***02/02/09*** Haha... Another waitlist from Boston University. Serves me right for complaining about waitlists.

***01/31/09*** Another waitlist... this time at Vanderbilt. I would go to Virginia over Vanderbilt so it doesn't really matter but waitlists are definitely annoying... Just make a decision, yes or no! Haha... Right now though... Columbia and Berkeley are the only decisions I'm biting my fingernails over and the only two places I'd go over Virginia. I've now heard back from half of my 17 schools. This process seems to have taken so long yet I can't believe I'm almost done.

***01/23/09*** Status Checker: Vanderbilt letter on its way...

***01/22/09*** So I'm shocked!! I thought I would have surely been rejected from Penn, but I just received an email stating that I've been placed on their waitlist. It's weird, however, the instant you realize that you aren't going somewhere, especially when for a year you've imagined what it might be like to go to school there. So long Penn...
Virginia is currently the frontrunner.

***01/17/09*** Out at NYU...so not living in Soho. Not too disappointing because I feel lucky to even be considered at these top schools. I'm just sooo glad that I'm cemented into a Top 10, and no one can take that away. ...Still holding out for my top 2!

***01/09/09*** IN AT UVA!!!!!!!! AHH!!! I got a call this morning from the Dean of Admissions! My dreams have definitely come true this cycle!!! I'm into a Top 10 school!!!

***01/07/09*** Got back to school today, checked the mail, and rejected at Georgetown and waitlisted at UCLA. It was sort of expected from Georgetown but a little disappointing from UCLA. However, I'm honestly a little relieved about UCLA too. After applying early decision, I was sort of praying for a deferral because I've been having second thoughts about being forced to go to LA, especially after knowing the consideration Berkeley (my #1) is giving to my application. A waitlist isn't a deferral but it isn't a rejection so it's not all bad news. If it counts for anything, UCLA's waitlist letter is really nice and states "the Admissions Committee is 'sufficiently impressed' by your qualifications to place you on our waitlist." So... On we go!

***12/22/08*** Email from Boston U. stating that there has been a significant influx of applications this year, and I'll hear something from them by mid-January. Getting into BC definitely mitigates the nerves regarding BU though.

***12/18/08*** BIG PACKET FROM BOSTON COLLEGE!!! I can't believe it!!! Also, got an email from Dean Tom at Berkeley Law saying I've passed initial review and have been selected for further consideration by the Faculty Admissions Committee (only about 1500 applications that aren't admitted directly move there...around 200 are generally accepted). But regardless of what happens with Berkeley...it has been a great day! I'm in at BC Law!!!!!

***12/02/08*** In at American!! Didn't think I'd hear from them so soon! Yay...Now I have options!

***11/24/08*** All 17 apps complete. I should definitely hear back from UCLA and BC within a few weeks.

***11/21/08*** In at Miami! (I'm officially going to law school!)

Similar numbers and schools...good luck! 1- What's your number 1-3 choices? 2- How did you hear from American (email, snail mail)?

Friday, October 10 2008 at 08:00 PM

Sounds good! Congrats. When do they let you know about scholarships? What type of law you want to practice and where?

Friday, October 10 2008 at 08:00 PM

I'm in Teach For America and it has changed my career path. I want to practice public interest law...but due to high tuition costs...I will do corporate law for 3-7 yrs first, then do public interest law. I'm not sure where I want to live. Hopefully I will get into a t14 school so the degree is portable.

Saturday, September 06 2008 at 08:00 PM

Wow, Congrats on all the acceptances you have received!

Friday, June 06 2008 at 08:00 PM

please elaborate on your two cents...I am going insane over here.

Friday, June 06 2008 at 08:00 PM

Thank you. I've been going over some of the same points you have been talking about for weeks. Prior to visiting Chicago, I was ready to put a deposit down at DePaul, but now I am trying to consider all of my options. I eventually want to be the general counsel of a sports franchise. There are various ways to get there, but the big firm route seems to be the easiest. I eventually would like to practice in California, but I wouldn't mind Miami or Chicago. I initially wrote Miami off because I am deathly afraid of hurricanes, but I see now that it was stupid conclusion. I am trying to get more money from Southwestern and hope to transfer, if I do well enough my first year, but that of course is a risky proposition because no one knows how they will initially do. I put money down on Southwestern today and I am thinking about putting the initial seat deposit down at either Miami/DePaul, though I have never been to Miami. Thank you again. Good Luck at Berkeley.

Friday, June 06 2008 at 08:00 PM

Haha...I am actually looking for flights right now. Do you live in FL? I like CA/NY because if I don't get into sports there is a chance of getting into corporate/entertainment law. I would assume Florida has more minor league teams than CA/NY because the sheer size of FL. I can guarantee it will be an interesting month.

Thank you!
Thursday, September 11 2008 at 08:00 PM

Yes it definitely is a blessing. I'm ridiculously happy, lol. Congratulations on one hell of a cycle! Have you settled completely on Berkeley?

Vandy
Thursday, September 11 2008 at 08:00 PM

I would love for Vandy to be a definite but they haven't let me know about fin-aid yet and, unfortunately, in this economy, WUSTL's 25K per year is kind of difficult to just pass up. BUT I'm going to contact Vandy's financial aid office tomorrow morning. Wish me luck! lol And that's great on Berkeley. Let me know how ASD goes!

Love Your Final Post
Tuesday, February 17 2009 at 07:00 PM

Very inspirational and equally truthful. Congratulations to you and best of luck!

Congratulations!!!!!!!!
Sunday, December 28 2008 at 07:00 PM

Congratulations on Berkeley! Say hi to Professor Smoot for me!

Friday, June 06 2008 at 08:00 PM

So thankfully I got into Loyola, because flights to Miami were waaaaaayyyy too expensive and I'm on a very tight budget. Haha

Friday, June 06 2008 at 08:00 PM

As of right now, yes I will be going to Loyola but they haven't offered me any money. Their cost of tuition is $4,500 less I believe and I have the option of staying at home for a year. But the Northwestern degree is after all a Northwestern degree and there are at least 2 alumni who have become the General Counsel of sports franchises. I am leaning more toward Loyola though. I should know in 3 weeks.

Tuesday, November 18 2008 at 07:00 PM

yea, you're right. but i am thinking W&L bc it is in the middle of no where and i know i will grind that first year. i want to transfer back to my undergrad (berkeley, which you will be attending lol) after my first year. so if i'm stuck in the middle of no where then i will be forced to study hard. i'm not sure right now what i wanna do, but i better make up my mind in the next few days. thanks for your opinion! if you need some info berk, just let me know.

Congrats!!
Tuesday, December 16 2008 at 07:00 PM

Looks like we'll be in the bay together...I'll be at USF. We'll have to link up. My youngest cousin just signed a letter of intent to play at Cal. So I'll be at the games every week...

congrats!
Monday, June 15 2009 at 08:00 PM

Hi! I just came across your profile and your final post is so uplifting! do you have any advice for a newbie about to apply for the 09 cycle?

Well Done
Thursday, April 02 2009 at 08:00 PM

Just to add mine to your already long list of comments -- thank you for being so positive. I will be applying in the upcoming cycle and find what you have to say uplifing.

Congrats!
Friday, November 28 2008 at 07:00 PM

Hey, I came across your profile and just wanted to say congrats to a great cycle! I have similar stats and am retaking to up my 153 (also a URM) but you give us 153 scorers hope! :-)

Thanks
Sunday, June 14 2009 at 08:00 PM

for your "final post." I'm just getting into the law school admissions process, but your words are certainly appreciated and highly respectable. I am sure you were accepted to Berkeley in part for the maturity and kindness you demonstrate via the manner in which you represent yourself to others (like on this site). Berkeley is my dream school; I would hope they choose applicants based on their achievements, perspective, and hard work, rather than based solely on their LSAT score. Berkeley claims to be less in the "numbers game" business, and I think your acceptance helps to prove that. Congratulations! Enjoy your time at such a wonderful school.

best of luck!
Sunday, July 19 2009 at 08:00 PM

best of luck! your accomplishments this cycle really give me hope that i also can do as well....i hope i had even as half as the achievements you made this time around! enjoy Berkeley! maybe in the future i will see you there :)

Inspiring!
Monday, August 24 2009 at 08:00 PM

Your profile was inspiring as I went through the most challenging time in my life earlier this year. I didn't even consider applying to T14 schools until I came across your profile. Thank you for the inspiration. Good luck at Berkeley!

U inspire me.Thanks u. U know i sit at work with people who have 4.0s and can probably get 170s on the lsat...but i get more done than them and they are definately not smarter than i am. a 4 hour test is definately not everything..there is more to an application.

Thanks for your posting!
