Additional info & updates

I'd love to hear from anyone going to Rutgers - Newark this fall, or moving to Hoboken/Jersey City, NJ.

If you're on thefacebook and heading to RU-N, check out http://washington.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2369757377

Unused fee waivers: W. New England, Marquette, Lewis & Clark, Valpo, Quinnipac, Ave Maria, Pacific, Idaho, S. Dakota, Hofstra, & Hamline....Loyola is free online for everyone, DO THE OPTIONAL ESSAY

Scholarship amounts are per year

I've spent extensive time on SU and Willamette's, as well as UW (obviously), campuses if anyone has any questions about them, or their surrounding area, feel free to ask. I also spent significant time on Lewis & Clark's campus 3-4 years ago. Its a great place, location/campus/law school, it just wasn't for me.

Lastly, before my quasi-blog, check out BlackCobra122 if you want to see, imho, the most interesting profile/debate on LSN. Its worth the time.

11/6/06 - E-mail from UW, I'm complete

11/17/06 - Called Depaul and they are currently reviewing my application

11/21/06 - E-mail from Loyola confirming my application is complete and informing me that they don't anticipate sending decisions until after Christmas Break.

11/27/06 - E-mail from DePaul saying they've ordered my report. I'm not certain if they're just behind, or if the person I spoke to 10 days ago was mistaken. LSAC shows Depaul having requested my report on 10/23. I expect to hear from them first either way.

11/29/06 - E-mail from Santa Clara notifying me that I'm complete....about freaking time.

12/04/06 - VICTORY!!!!! I got in to Rutgers via e-mail. Letters go out in the mail tomorrow according to the e-mail, nothing about aid but right now I'm just psyched to get in SOMEWHERE.

12/05/06 - Interesting stuff on Rutgers residency I thought I should post. I got this in an e-mail from the Dean of Admissions today after I thanked her for the e-mail and asked about residency
"Establishing residency is relatively easy. Since you are currently living in WA, there is no question you will have to cut your ties to your home state and move to NJ for law school. Therefore, as long as you have a year-long lease for an apartment, or purchase property, by the start of class, I can give you in-state residency beginning in the
fall 2007 semester. You will need to register to vote, change your driver's license, etc. But that can come later. The year-long commitment to live in NJ is the most important item.

If you choose to live in NY or any other surrounding state, then you cannot have in-state. You have to physically live in NJ. "

Anyway, it sure makes Rutgers an attractive option.

12/08/06 - Decided to change my numbers to the left of the schools from my preference rankings to Chiashu percentages. The Rutger's info reminded me that it really comes down to $ for me. Rutgers packet came today in a large white envelope.

12/11/06 - E-mail from Seton Hall notifying me that I'm complete. I'd thought I received something via snail mail a while back that said the same thing, but I'm not 100% certain so I'm changing the date to reflect the e-mail. Also, it said there wont be any decisions until the New Year.

12/12/06 - 2 for 2. Big envelope from Depaul with "Welcome to Depaul" on the cover. Dean's Merit Scholarship: 12k/year with a 3.3 GPA (about top 30%) at the end of each academic year. The fiance is pushing hard for Chi-town so the $ makes the tuition difference manageable. I'm psyched.

12/13/06 - Got a call from a faculty member at DePaul today. More or less a call to introduce himself and offer himself up to answer any questions I might have now or in the future. A very nice touch, having never been to Chicago I plan to take advantage of this.

12/16/06 - T-Shirt from DePaul

12/23/06 - More stuff from DePaul, most importantly dates for the admitted students weekends: 3/10 & 3/31. A weekend trip to Chicago in the Spring will be fun.

1/5/07 - I'm moving, unexpectedly, and I didn't want to wait for my mail to get forwarded so I e-mailed each of the schools that haven't sent me a decision yet. Seton Hall said I should receive a decision by the end of next week.

01/09/07 - Picked up my mail from the old place (why it wasn't forward is anyone's guess) and Seton Hall's letter, small white envelope, came with 9k. Fully renewable with a 3.0+, $4500 renewable between a 2.9 and 3.0.

1/16/07 - Status on the Seattle U status checker changed to decision mailed. This one is a big one, if only because it brings the home town in to play possibly. Should be tomorrow......

1/17/07 - Of course my mailbox was conspicuously empty.

1/18/07 - In at Seattle U, big white envelope, no mention of $. It DID end up going to the old address even though I changed it with them. No harm no foul I guess, other than my peace of mind

1/23/07 - E-mail from Rutgers about their open house. Its 3/28 @ 5pm, which sounds almost too good to be true. SHU's ASW is the next morning, and because RU-N's is in the evening I can fly out late the night before and not have to stay the extra day. Hopefully I can make it work with my job, I'd really like to make the trip.

1/24/07 - In at Willamette, in a small envelope, with 20k reknewable at a 2.9 cum. The letter was dated 1/9, but the postmark was 1/22....weird, but not important. It sure does make it cheap, between a tiny CoL and cheap tuition.....

1/25/07 - Soon to be ex-US Attorney of the Western District of Washington (my old, longtime boss) is joining the SU faculty. I still don't know if I can afford their tuition, but anyone who's interested in SU should be excited and intrigued by this. He's quite the guy, and also a great lecturer.

1/27/07 - Probably should have written the optional essay for Loyola. Waitlisted, small white envelope. I'll probably write the essay now and see what happens. Pure laziness at the time probably. No way I can know for sure, but I feel kind of dumb at the moment.

1/29/07 - Let the decision process begin. Its not looking like SCU is offering any $ to numbers like mine, if they were to admit me. My fiance and I don't even discuss UW and GWU, its such a remote possibility, so we really can start paring things down now. DePaul and living in Chicago sure would be fun, the Newark schools' proximity to NYC is enticing, and Willamette both keeps my debt WAY down and lets me maximize my network in the PNW legal community. Decisions, decisions.....

1/30/07 - Trip to Chicago is booked. March 9 - 11 with the fiance. We'll be attending the DePaul ASW on the 10th, and probably taking a look at Loyola if we can. I do plan on staying on their waitlist, at least for the time being. Anyone attending the ASW should feel free to contact me, I'd love to meet up with some other people seriously considering DePaul.

01/31/07 - SU e-mail about mini-open houses upcoming. Not that I need to attend, I literally work 4 blocks from Sullivan Hall, but you'd think they wouldn't schedule all of them for Friday afternoons. Working stiffs like me might like something more flexible. Oh well, I'm just bitter I didn't get any $....not that I deserved it.

- Phone call around 6pm from a 1L at Seattle U. Asked if I had any questions/concerns, a nice touch. If I didn't work so close and with countless SU Law grads I'd probably appreciate it a lot more.

2/3/07 - DING! (Think ESPN radio's Dan Patrick show). UW, one page, small white envelope. First UW ding, yet strangely inspiring. We're ready to move away for a while, and now it becomes that much more likely that we will.

2/7/07 - I e-mailed SHU about possible hotel deals or fin. aid for travelling to NJ and they promptly got back to me with a number of items: $250 towards airfare, a dinner in NYC with current students after the ASW(because I'm a merit scholar), and they're working on a group rate at the Hilton across the street from the school. We're DEFINITELY going to look at the Newark schools now. The $ for travel was completely unexpected.

2/8/07 - Late Temple fee waiver won me over. Its a reach probably, I'm down at the 25% at best, but I work with a Temple JD who I respect a great deal and she speaks VERY highly of the school. What's 12$ at this point right?

2/10/07 - Booked a trip to see SHU and RU-N for their respective events at the end of March.

2/12/07 - It appears GWU finally started dinging people. I'd appreciate it if the mailman would hurry up and deliver mine so my pipedream can be summarily dismissed.

2/14/07 - GWU finally got around to mailing my rejection. 2 left, and now I'm lamenting the fact the Temple probably wont let me know until the very last minute. My own fault, but a bummer regardless.

2/17/07 - Mailer from DePaul about RSVPing for the ASW and other events.

2/20/07 - Phone call from a 3L at DePaul. I couldn't chat, I was just getting to work, but I have to say its nice being recruited...despite my less than stellar numbers.

- Also, an invitation from SHU to RSVP for their events as well, including a dinner in NYC with some current students. I'm feeling really lucky we're able to afford to go see these schools before we pick.

2/22/07 - Complete e-mail from Temple.

2/27/07 - Withdrew from LUC waitlist. I'm just not willing to wait, I'm happy with my other options as they stand.

03/10/07 - Attended the DePaul ASW. I was neither disappointed nor overly impressed. Still the frontrunner, but Rutgers and SHU still have a chance to change my mind in 3 weeks. Chicago definitely felt like a city we could spend the next 3 years.

03/13/07 - Someone on LSN with a complete date after me has received a decision from Temple. THey're an auto-admit, but I guess it's time to obsess about the mail again....SCU waiting this long to dole out decisions is ridiculous imho.

03/27/07 - Withdrew from Willamette and SU. I fly out to NJ tomorrow night, and I can't wait. The idea of a new city really has me excited. Still nothing from SCU. Almost no chance I'll go there, but after all this waiting I'd just like to know if I got in.

04/01/07 - Got back from RU-N and SHU last night. It was a good trip, helped clear things up a lot. I think I'll be at RU next fall. Its just a gut feeling, but it feels more like the right place for me. Turned in my RU-N deposit, deadline was the 1st, but 2/3rds of it is refundable if things change.

04/02/07 - Withdrew from DePaul

04/08/07 - Waitlisted at Temple, not sure what I'll do.

04/09/07 - E-mailed the Dean who signed my waitlist letter to ask some questions. Basically I'd be coming from out west, what timeframe would I expect to hear from them IF I were to get an offer?...how long to decide once admitted?...that sort of thing. I'm trying to gauge if its worth staying on the waitlist.

04/12/07 - Withdrew from SHU. My response from Temple was a song and dance show, so I'm going to withdraw tomorrow.

04/24/07 - WAY after the fact, but I ran across someone on LSN who said Rutgers (C & N) have a status checker at http://gradstudy.rutgers.edu/statusnotes.shtml
They NEVER mentioned it anywhere in my RU-N paperwork, but it reflects everything that it should for me now. Just an FYI for anyone who has read this far.

05/11/07 - In at SCU, so my cycle is officially complete. 6-2-2, but my decision is long since made and I'll be withdrawing on Monday.

Thanks for the comment. No talk of money yet from SU. I'm thinking I won't get any, looking at the amounts of money they've been giving to ppl with higher gpa/lsat combo. Good luck, maybe we'll both end up at Seattle!

Thanks! They're the main school I'd be interested in starting during the summer. Although I spent some time looking at apartmentguide.com last night and it is EXPENSIVE to live there! Geez! I didn't realize it was that much.

Thanks! I am crossing my fingers. Though I was really bummed to learn that they don't let you defer. We shall see. Good Luck with everything else. I can't believe UW hasn't even started sending out decisions yet.

Sunday, November 12 2006 at 07:00 PM

I saw you mentioned something about getting an invite to a visiting students weekend at Depaul. Was this in a small letter or in a big packet? I have gotten so much stuff, I am not sure if I missed it or not

re DePaul
Wednesday, January 24 2007 at 07:00 PM

yeah I apologize if I'm like a DePaul troll - I personally really liked the ppl, staff, (and their attitude about the school), and I even liked the building itself a whole lot (though plenty of people complain about the building being old - I went to a little old Catholic h.s. though, maybe thats it...) Heck you may want to apply and Kent and / or visit there just to see it and compare the two. Those are actually the only 2 schools I've seen thus far. I really favored DePaul based on their open houses. However Kent is a little better in the rankings and its reputation might even improve over time w/ all the good lawyers coming out of there... oh, you have Loyola too... well there you go. Interested in what ppl say about them as well. I'd say def. look at some maps and consider location if it is a factor for you also... ok thats my 10 cents Good luck *NOTE: acceptance ltr came in a big packet*

Yeah dude I'm totally stoked about Seattle. The money too was awesome, I didn't expect that. Have fun in Chicago. You should throw in a free app to Florida Coastal. Get a free trip to Florida. They pay $500 no matter if you attend there or not. Good luck!

great cycle so far! Can I ask why you said no to hofstra app. even if you got a fee waiver?

DePaul
Wednesday, December 27 2006 at 07:00 PM

I have to say unless DePaul throws me some money (which is unlikely), I more than likely won't end up there. COL in Chicago plus the full tuition will still mean a lot of loans, even with the SO working full-time. Toledo's giving me full tuition, which is awfully hard to turn down, even though it's not quite Chicago. All that being said, I'm still waiting on 20 schools, so a lot can happen.

LOL that made me laugh :). For some reason I woke up early this morning (I try to sleep in on my school days, bleh) and in the three hours i've been awake i've only refreshed TWICE. Tuesdays are horrible lol. I've kind of given up hope it will be quite awhile before I hear anything though.

YLS is the leader right now. Big surprise, right? But HLS and SLS are still under consideration. Honestly, I'd probably be seriously considering Michigan if they'd offered me a full ride. And I'm waiting to see about UVA's merit aid. But YLS, HLS, and SLS (especially the first two) have excellent LRAP programs, so I've made peace with the prospect of tens of thousands of dollars of debt.

UO
Friday, December 30 2005 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the info on Oregon! Since I can't visit, it makes it difficult for me to committ to going. Your experience with DePaul has been the complete opposite of mine. At first, I'm excited about all the stuff I'm getting. Then, when I have a concern, I email the guy who signed our acceptance letter (I think he said specifically to email or call if I had any questions). 2 weeks go by and I get nothing. So I call and leave a message. That was 3 weeks ago. Still nothing. I even sent a hard copy of my letter and haven't gotten a response. Now I hear you're getting a call from a 3L to answer your questions? Nothing for me. Oh, I got my RSVP confirmation for the 10 March event. . .great, except I didn't RSVP for it! I RSVP'ed for the 11 April Dean's Reception. I guess I'm just a little perturbed by DePaul right now. So, where's it looking like you're headed? Do you know yet? Right now, Pacific's my top choice of the bunch, assuming I'm offered a scholarship increase (I can't afford to go otherwise). I had a very positive experience when I visited, and I actually found myself not wanting to leave Sacramento when my trip ended. I'm taking that as a good sign. :)

Hey, congrats on DePaul...any idea if that's where you'll end up? I'm from new york, and kinda freaking out about where i should go

Thanks
Friday, December 30 2005 at 07:00 PM

I actually (speak of the devil) just got an email from DePaul. It seemed sort of form emailish because it was about 6 paragraphs long (and didn't address my concern for working in public interest law with a huge debt load at all), but at least I heard back. It's a no. Bah. Here's hoping on Pacific! I'm glad you're having a good experience with them, though. It's nice to feel wanted at schools. I'm sure some people aren't as interested in Pacific as I am for the same reasons I'm losing interest a bit in DePaul. It all depends on individual experience, I think. :)

I am moving from SF so happy to see someone else going from the west to the east. I think I am living on campus the first year, I looked at Hoboken, and after the school essentially lined up in state, I can afford a nicer area 2nd and 3rd. We should be pen pals so I have a buddy there.

I'll be at Rugers in the fall also, but doing the evening program. I've lived in Jersey for the past 4 years (time has flown!) and have a great job that I love in NYC (and those connections will help me post law school...). Good luck apartment hunting. You may also want to look in Jersey City. parts are just as nice as Hoboken, and much cheaper. I also picked Rutgers over Seton Hall after visiting both schools. It was an easy decision when factoring the huge cost difference as well!

I am scheduled to fly out to Newark on the 26 (Thursday). I was wondering if you have any questions you did not ask, but wish you had? Are you involved in any other user groups you might recommend?
