Additional info & updates

Oct. 2005 - It is what it is. I sent in my tuition deposit to Cooley and am preparing myself for the May class.

November 2005 - I went to an open house at Cooley. The students I met seemed nice and the staff is willing to answer questions. The facilities are great because they are quite new. They do have a big open door policy, but staying in at Cooley is a challenge. Their exam schedule and policy plus their strict attendance policy does not help. Their grading scale is different. (A, A-, B, B-, C, C-, D, F). So doing a GPA conversion from one school to another (i.e. STU), you kinda get screwed. Professors are stingy with As and Bs.

Sat. 12/17 - Santa Clara University (SCU) sent their letter advising me to retake the LSAT in December. They would hold my file, if so requested, until the Dec. score came in. SCU informed me that only 5% of their admits last year had LSAT scores below 155. =( Good thing about SCU is they take the highest score.

February - I attended St. Thomas University's law school event on Friday, Feb. 17th. Although the surrounding area is not great, the campus itself is nice and the school's enviornment has a great feel. The students are friendly and willing to answer questions. The staff is extremely friendly. Dean Butterworth and Associate Dean Sheldon are extremely approachable. Still waiting... Grading scale (A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D, F)

03/12/06 - What is going on with the University of Detroit? Any movement? They sent a letter informing me that my application was incomplete (missing final transcript) which was not the case. I called last Monday and the transcript was found. The rep told me that my application was "moving forward." Still nothing... This is driving me crazy!

3/30/06 - Phew! UDM e-mailed me today to let me know I was accepted. Now, if anyone has any suggestions about housing in Detroit or the nearby suburbs, please let me know! Thanks.

03/31/06 - Withdrew acceptance at Cooley and made the deposit refund deadline in just a nick of time.

04/11/06 - Did my rejection letter from Santa Clara get lost in the mail? If not, then I'll just keep thinking positively. But I'm quite satisfied with the University of Detroit. As far as getting off of the St. Thomas University waitlist, the odds (numbers game) seem to be against me.

At UDM's Special Summer Program. News of a full acceptance or rejection will come early August...

Friday, August 4 - Officially IN! The wait, the anxiety, and this whole application process is finally OVER. On to law school!!

be in that 5% this application cycle. Did they say they have a cut off for the lowest they accept. I look at the stats for my stricter schools FSU and Mercer and found that they accepted at least 1 with my numbers last year. Why can't we be the ones they decide to pick with the low LSAT if everything else is positive?

the typos in that previous post. Good luck on all of your applications this cycle.

Are you going to be going to Cooley? If so let me know...Paul

Cooley visit...
Tuesday, February 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

I'm headed up there tomorrow and taking a tour on Friday. A friend that attends says the exams (no outlines, for one) prepare the Cooley students well for the bar. Glad you had a positive visit. I expect the same. Good luck in May...I will (probably) be following in Sept.

I felt the same way. I really needed some good news and when I got home to see that email, I hoped it was the good news I wanted to hear!! It was...you're admitted! LOL. I was very happy. I think the school has some great programs and I'm really interested in a few of their clinics. They really seem to be involved with their community. I need to visit though because from what I hear from several people, Detroit isn't the best place. So, I have to see for myself. I'm from NYC so I'm pretty sure I can adapt to some things...except maybe the weather...LOL. How about you? What have you heard or what do you think about it?

Wow...
Friday, December 16 2005 at 07:00 PM

Great information. I appreciate it. Yeah, I wonder how you'll do in Michigan...that would be a site. LOL. But, when I spoke to someone at Cooley, they said they had a lot of students from warm climates and they're adapting. I guess you have to do what ya have to do. So, I'm sure you'll be fine. Just invest in a nice goose down coat. It will really save you. LOL As for the area, again, that's good to know. I did a little research on apartments but I just didn't know the areas to look in, so now I can look again with what you've given me. As for the school itself, they do seem pretty friendly and on point. I had participated in their financial aid online chat once and they're very responsive to emails and calls. So, I hope that the professors and students are as approachable. I just have to decide when to visit...Have you sent in your deposit yet or are you still contemplating between Cooley and UDM? Yes, who knows, we just may see each other at orientation! :-)

Sorry it has taken me a while to respond... I think I am leaning towards UDM over my other choices. UDM is a great school in Detroit and it has a lot of prestige amongst lawyers in the downtown area. The school also seems to put students first and give their students great opps and clinics to learn real life law. The only complaint that I have is the condition of the school. It is very old and in need of repair, not typical of a private school Also, its in Detroit, but a nice area at least. There are links online for apts in the area, there are plenty. If you have any further questions email me and I will answer further...

Congratulations

It's been a while since I stopped by. Congratulations on UDM. Much success in school and in your career.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't accept it because I'm still waiting to hear from 12 other schools. I don't know why it's taking so long. But anyhow, the deadline for me to accept, well for them to receive my deposit is May 12, so I'm hoping to buy some time. Otherwise, I will definitely be accepting and attending the SSP this summer. Thanks for letting me about Robin. I'm looking for a place myself if I do decide to go there. I'm from NYC so it will be a big change for me. From the looks of it, I am about 98% sure I will be going... unless a miracle happens and the other 12 schools take me. Maybe I'll see you there? Congrats, you must be excited! If you have any other information or know of anyone else that participated or will participate, can you please let me know? I called UDM and they said about 1/3 pass and if you pass, you're in.. so hopefully it won't be that difficult to pass. Thanks again!

I saw that left ang2383 a message regarding UDM's Special Summer Program. Do you know if Robin has any advice regarding the SSP? If so could you find out how difficult the program and what are the odds of receiving admission for the fall through the program?

so it looks like i'm the last left on lsn to hear from santa clara...out of curiosity, what did your decision look like? (envelope size, etc) Also, if you remember, how long from the date of the letter did it take until you received it? I called last week and they said they should have sent them out by the end of last week. Thanks for your help!

yeah i went to the orientation this weekend. I was really impressed by the school. I also visited Ave Maria. Both schools seemed to have alot to offer. I think I am leaning towards UDM though. I would love to hear what you think of UDM shoot me an email if you get a chance
