Extra Curricular Information

These are my real numbers. My GPA went up a little after the Fall semester, but very few if any schools would have been able to take that into account.

Engineering undergrad, very good resume (in general), NO extracurriculars, bad PS, medium recommendations.

Additional info & updates

1-21-08: WL'ed at NW. Roll with the punches...

1-18-08: Official notification of acceptance from NYU, acceptance letter from NYU, acceptance phone call from UPenn.

1-17-08: Decision @ UVA, phone message from UPenn. Not sure the consequences of either (although I guess I am sure it's not a Penn rejection).

1-2-08: E-mail from GW with acceptance.

12-25-07: The past few days have added some lucidity to my thinking with regard to my preferences. My top choice (by a mile, but it is also a reach by a mile) is Stanford, and my realistic #1 is Virginia. Michigan is close behind. Then there is a small gap before Duke and Cornell. I would probably need significant scholarship money at the latter two schools to pass up Michigan. The difference between Michigan and Virginia is much closer and may need to be settled by visits. Their soft-factors will play a big role, if of course I get into UVA (which isn't a sure thing). It's pretty fun to turn the tables! :)

12-24-07: In at Cornell with an invitation to apply for the Dean's scholarship (I actually really like the essay topic so I'm looking forward to applying!). Scared the living daylights out of me with their razor-thin letter-sized envelope.

12-21-07: In at NYU (via e-mail to recommender)!

12-18-07: "Faculty review" at Berkeley -- probably not a good sign as I have weak SF's.

12-17-07: In at UIUC with $25k/year (no conditions); comes out to 3/4 tuition. They're giving out mad dough it looks like this year.

12-15-07: In at Notre Dame. :) $15k/year scholarship (only condition is good academic standing). Still no word from UIUC despite being at "Decision" since Monday or so.

12-07-07: $7k per year at UT-Austin (and moreover, in-state residency all three years). Certainly will be something to keep in mind...

12-06-07: In at UT-Austin (via snail-mail, status checker still says "Complete"). :)

12-03-07: In at Vandy & Michigan. :)

12-01-07: Went to "Decision" at Michigan (yes on a Saturday). I guess decision was made on Friday, though, because they only update early in the AM.

11-30-07: Complete @ Penn, changed to "Decision mailed (11-29-07) on Vandy status checker...

11-29-07: Confirmed that I am complete via phone at GWU (though they said I am "probably" complete; whatever that means) and Berkeley (where they said they were waiting on another LOR -- I apologized profusely and quickly told LSAC to send the third one). Still waiting on NYU & Penn but applied there later so not worried yet...

11-02-07: In at Duke! Notified via e-mail (never got their online application tracker working...). Notification via e-mail/web on Nov. 15 of acceptance to joint degree program w/ the graduate school. Snail mail arrived on November 16.

Sounds good

We should certainly keep each other updated. Do you absolutely not want to remain in NY for Law School? It seems that you are not interested in Columbia or NYU, though NYU is a probably a 50-50 shot for you.

Hidden Fee Waiver
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

That means that you did not receive an email from the school giving you the waivers, however on LSAC, once you get to the part of the application where they ask you to pay, it says "Fee Waived due to CRS", or something of that nature. As for Soft Factors, I will update all that once I got some important decisions from schools. It would be too obvious who I am if I state them, in case an adcom check LSN (as I'm sure they do).

Thanks
Monday, August 13 2007 at 08:00 PM

Thanks. Good luck to you too.

TITLE REQUIRED
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

Let me then advise you that Washington and Lee application is online is free whether you got a fee waiver or not. They are doing free online applications through LSAC. Just thought that its a school you'd be interested in since its situated in a wonderful little city in Virginia and is more reputable than a few you are applying to. They are also an auto-admit for you, and a likely big scholarship (you were asking for that on LSD).

congrats
Sunday, August 19 2007 at 08:00 PM

to you too! That online status thing is evil... it still says a decision hasn't been made!

yay
Wednesday, July 18 2007 at 08:00 PM

thanks! look at our matching lists! now the LONG wait begins...i'm dreading, but tonight i'm celebrating.

Mechanical
Sunday, April 16 2006 at 08:00 PM

Mechanical Engineering nontrad here. I will likely not apply to my whole list since my family may constrain my ability to move.

Congrats!
Monday, October 01 2007 at 08:00 PM

On Duke!

Congrats
Monday, August 13 2007 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on Duke! Michigan's probably up next.

Tuesday, April 24 2007 at 08:00 PM

Meh, I'm only applying to schools I would want to go to. If I don't get in anywhere, I'll retake and re-apply next cycle. Congrats on Duke!

Congrats on Duke
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

Seems like us number twins get decisions from the same school on the same day. Congratulations on your Duke acceptance. I hope the pressure is now off you (like it is off me). ENJOY!

I see you fudged your stats a bit
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

Better be cautious than sorry :) I should probably do the same

Hi
Wednesday, August 08 2007 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on Duke! My experience is actually in government, although I did a year during undergrad in the manufacturing industry.

Congrats
Sunday, May 20 2007 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on Duke. We're pretty close to number twins, so I'm sure I'll be checking your status almost as much as mine ;)

hi again
Wednesday, July 18 2007 at 08:00 PM

wow, everything is happening for us on the same day! did you get an email from harvard about a call, or just the 'complete' email? i just got the complete email :(

duke online status
Wednesday, November 07 2007 at 07:00 PM

Hi there. Noticed that you said you never got the online status thing to work. It's having the same problem for me. Did you ever manage to get them to update it?

Berkeley
Friday, June 29 2007 at 08:00 PM

That's my fault, I forgot to update it. I went complete 10/29, but my hopes aren't high for an acceptance.

Focus
Tuesday, March 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

Any drive or focus I have are driven by a all consuming fear of failure... and lots of caffine. Congrats on getting into Duke so early... you must be thrilled! What is your top pick?

Nah...
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

Not worried about not hearing from Michigan yet. I only went complete there on November 16th, I doubt any school not named Duke hands out decisions within ten days of an applicant going complete... You shouldnt worry either because it is early for you to hear too... It is one of my top choices though, so I really hope I get in.

FT vs PT
Tuesday, March 07 2006 at 07:00 PM

I would prefer FT, but I am willing to go PT for the right offer. Cost + Time + Location / Options Or some random formula. Haha. I'm pulling for some instate tuition. Less than 100K of debt would be a HUGE plus.

Harvard
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

They requested your file only one day before they requested mine from LSAC... and yet you've been complete for 10 days now and I've still not gone complete... :(

Congrats...
Saturday, October 20 2007 at 08:00 PM

...on Duke, and getting in all your apps so early! Can I ask which joint degree program you applied to? It's a bit annoying that the e-mail said some don't do reviews until January. :-(

congrats
Sunday, November 04 2007 at 07:00 PM

congrats on duke. hopefully the rest will come through as well. waiting is by far the worst part.

Congrats
Monday, August 13 2007 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on your likely Michigan acceptance. I hope mine is coming soon. I'm tired of looking at the status checker.

Still Complete at Michigan
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

I gave the status checker a look today after your warning, but not yet for me. Congratulations on going to decision there. I'll keep an eye on your profile. I hope to go to decision within one week of yours since I went complete tehre exactly one week after you. Good Luck :)

Hmmm...
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

Unimpressive? How so? You had a very tough major and kept a top GPA and scored 98th percentile on the LSAT. Don't underestimate yourself (especially since that forces me to underestimate myself due to have similar numbers). :)

Soft Factor
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

I think your engineering degree for an aspiring intellectual property lawyer is a fantastic soft factor (I should have done engineering in college too, but too late to cry now). I am a positive thinking guy lol, so I like to think we're both in at Michigan... :)

michigan
Monday, October 01 2007 at 08:00 PM

you are in at michigan. congrats! that is my dream school, and i wish i just had a couple points of your lsat score!

Engineering...
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

I'd probably have gone with something like Chemical Engineering. Mathematics and the sciences used to be my best subjects back in high school and my whole family history has been connected to mathematics. I was the first one that broke away from that, and not because I wasn't that good at it, but because I wanted to try something different... As for considering the ND offer, I actually am doing that right now. It is still ranked below Duke, even with the very generous no-string scholarship, but I have always loved ND (including me being an Irish football fan). Of course I'd take Michigan over that package at ND in a heartbeat and start rooting for the worst enemy of the Irish. Hah!

An addition
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

Forgot to state my majors. I double majored in Political Science and Economics. Deffinitely two majors that are not too marketable without a graduate degree.

Congrats!
Monday, October 01 2007 at 08:00 PM

On Michigan!

UVA
Sunday, October 21 2007 at 08:00 PM

UVA would be pretty great I think. Their placement is really quite impressive. The only thing that makes me worried about UVA is that it's in Charlottesville. Nevertheless, I don't think I'll get in there. Probably will be waitlisted...

Congrats
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

on Michigan and Vandy. Hope I join you with a Michigan acceptance soon :)

More acceptances!
Wednesday, August 08 2007 at 08:00 PM

Congratulations on Vandy and Michigan! You're having a wonderful cycle! Come on HYS, wise up and admit rsr28.

nice start
Friday, November 02 2007 at 08:00 PM

nice start to the cycle...congrats. I saw on LSD that you applied to the MA/JD program at Duke. You still considering it? Duke, UVA & UM are definitely my top choices--so I'm hoping I can be in your position in a few weeks! Congrats again.

Congrats!
Monday, October 01 2007 at 08:00 PM

On Texas!

Thanks!
Wednesday, December 05 2007 at 07:00 PM

and congrats to you as well for not only UT, but also michigan, vanderbilt, and duke! also, i see youve applied to pretty much the best law schools minus columbia - why??

UVA Mich or Duke
Friday, November 02 2007 at 08:00 PM

No clue. If I get into any of those 3 I will be jumping for joy. I am really interested in the Duke Joint program though...

duke joint
Friday, November 02 2007 at 08:00 PM

yeah i'm not stressing it yet. I'm complete at all of them, so soon enough my friend. cultural anthro is the dual...really I just have a pretty broad base of interests, and this would allow me to basically create my own degree

2nd choice
Monday, November 05 2007 at 07:00 PM

would be NYU. yea i really hope applying early will help out. whats your top choice?

Fee Waiver
Wednesday, December 05 2007 at 07:00 PM

I know this sounds like a crazy question, but how does one apply for a fee waiver?

fee waivers
Wednesday, December 05 2007 at 07:00 PM

thanks so much! i thought it would be so hard to get fee waivers, so i never applied. but it seems as though everyone on this website has gotten at least a few fee waivers that i feel i should try.

.
Wednesday, August 08 2007 at 08:00 PM

I'm not sure I'm going to apply to Duke. It seems like a waste of time since I doubt I'd go there anyway. Alabama is high on my list. I'll have to wait and see if I get into Vandy, Emory, and Georgia before deciding which is my true number 1 though.

UT $$
Thursday, October 25 2007 at 08:00 PM

How were you notified of $$ at UT? Are you from TX? Holding out that they'll offer me something...however nominal. Thanks!

Wow!
Saturday, September 29 2007 at 08:00 PM

Nice cycle bro! killin it!!! 75k at UIUC aint too shabby!!

Thanks!
Saturday, September 15 2007 at 08:00 PM

Thank you! And Congrats on your amazing cycle, so far! Good luck with the rest of it!

Why BC
Saturday, September 15 2007 at 08:00 PM

I've lived in Texas for.. 15 years now. I'm ready for a change of scenery. And BC, well it was just a feeling I got while on campus. I like its reputation, I *love* Boston, and of the Boston schools I'm competitive at, BC is the best option for me. I like that it's located in Newton. As for UT, if I was accepted, I'd definitely consider it. I mean, I'm already familiar with the area, school, etc. And living in Texas is infinitely cheaper than the NE. UT is a great school, but I want to take a risk and move on from what feels safe. I can definitely give you more info on Austin if you have questions!

update?
Wednesday, July 18 2007 at 08:00 PM

hey- how was the interview? congrats on acceptances!

cool
Wednesday, July 18 2007 at 08:00 PM

Well, congrats, it sounds like a good interview (better than mine for sure) and probably the guy just didn't know that interviews are for everyone. I'm still really into NW, although kind of confused not to have heard from them. I think of the schools I've heard from so far, NYU is at the top, although some days I think Cornell. I would *love* to get into Harvard (obviously) but totally uncertain if and when that would happen. I'm just hoping that my cycle is over sooner rather than later, you know? I hate this waiting and obsessing part. I'm surprised you haven't heard from Cornell yet. Do you have a top choice?

Congrats!
Monday, October 01 2007 at 08:00 PM

On NYU!

Congratulations
Wednesday, December 05 2007 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on NYU and the rest. Also congratulations on doing whatever you did to have whatever awesome factors you most definitely have. You are probably a super person! Good Luck with everything !

Congrats!
Monday, October 01 2007 at 08:00 PM

On Penn and Virginia!

Congrats!
Saturday, October 20 2007 at 08:00 PM

On a fantastic cycle--it's really impressive! How did NU let you know? I applied as part of their early admission and I feel like I may have missed the memo on a waitlist or something...

Woah!
Friday, February 09 2007 at 07:00 PM

Wow, that Cornell scholarship is impressive! Are you following through with what you said and headed that-a-way?

Cornell Scholly!
Thursday, April 26 2007 at 08:00 PM

Nice! That merit/need based and how'd it come? In any event, that's a sweet deal.

Cornell bound?
Friday, February 09 2007 at 07:00 PM

Quite possibly. I'm still undecided.

Dude
Thursday, January 17 2008 at 07:00 PM

Got the same offer @ Cornell, wooooooo
