Additional info & updates

I just sent my deposit to Hofstra. It certainly wasn't my first choice, or even my second or third. But I like the school and now I need to prove to all those schools that rejected me that I belong in a tier 1 school.
I'm still going to remain on the waitlist at Miami and see what happens. Good luck to everyone this cycle.

I applied to Georgetown Early Action (everything was complete by December 1) and heard back right before their notification deadline of 12/16. I applied to GW in the first week of November (file was complete around then too) for the PT program and heard back just last week. Good luck, and good choice of schools!

Thanks

Thanks. They notified me with a big brown letter. I knew that something was different (I had applied last year and I was rejected. I got a small white letter at the time) I applied earlier last year, I also sent in my application at the end of October. They probably had my info on file from last year. I also saw their rep in NY, just to tell them that I was stil interested. I applied for September, and I was accepted for January. God luck with all of your applications. You should get into somewhere (you have much better number than I did and I still got into a school). Take care, and good luck!

Well, don't know for sure, but 2 thoughts: I applied more than a month before you and I'm originally from FL (spent most of my life there). I wrote an addendum explaining the connection in detail. I too was surprised since I am an out-of-stater. I've been gone many years. Hope you get in where you want.

hi! thanks for the note! well...not in so many words...it was a form letter and it said - "the number of applicants that scored extremely well on traditional predictors of success far exceeds the number of seats available"..then goes on to say the part about "predictors" (LSAT I would guess) falling by the wayside and if i perform "very well" somewhere else to please consider transferring...and that they would be "pleased" to send me info on transferring. I hope this helps...I REALLY wanted to go there b/c I am in state for tuition purposes (plus I like the school)...but since they did away with instate quotas (as far as I know) I did not really expect to get in. Good luck to you!

I don't think that UFL ever notified me of being complete and I received the decision from Miami about 2 weeks after they let me know.

Cardozo
Monday, October 03 2005 at 08:00 PM

Hi, thanks for the congrats...though I recently withdrew my application. A few days before the start of the January term at Cardozo, I got a call from Fordham accepting me for their Fall '06 term so knowing that I at least have Fordham in the bag, I decided to forfeit my place at Cardozo and see if I can get into any other schools. Though I'm not going to Cardozo, I did do a lot of research on the school and given that I did not apply to any school that I did not feel comfortable attending, I think Cardozo is an excelent insitution. They have an excellent faculty and high NY state bar passage rate. They can also provide a route to Biglaw work if you manage to be highly ranked in your class. They're at an excellent location in the Village and their facilities have been thoroughly renovated in the past few years. The only possible negative is that since Cardozo is a relatively young school, its alumni base is somewhat shallow which as you may know, is an important(not critical) part of obtaining post-law school employment. In general though, I have been much more impressed with Cardozo than I have been with Brooklyn, a school to which it is often compared... Since I applied for admission to the January term, admissions reviewed my file very quickly. I submitted my app. on Nov. 28(my file was complete within a day) and got a call from the Admissions Dean on Dec. 7 which would equal to a review period of roughly 10 days. Hope this helps...

hey, i dont recall if i got a financial aid package from miami. ive been getting so much stuff in the mail its hard to keep track. last year i got waitlisted at miami up until the last second in august, so that schools admissions i think are a little funny cause this year i didnt get waitlisted or anything. good luck though, its a good school with some nice weather and from what i hear som nice girls.

IThis is what happened last year. This year they kicked me to the curb before Christmas...bastards. I sents them an additional letter of interest and made a few calls, but apparently they had " a lot of people in (my) position." I wouldnt hold your breath. If its your first choice certainly send an additional letter of rec and a follow up letter of interest highlighting specific programs they offer. best of luck.

I received my denial letter earlier this week. Everything that I've heard from IU law is that they are really heavy on the LSAT score. Bummer for me. With the work experience, perhaps they will look at your file more favorably. Best of luck!

Good Luck with your apps. We are applying to alot of the same schools. May I ask why you didn't apply to Michigan State?

Miami
Wednesday, January 11 2006 at 07:00 PM

Not sure what the chances are of getting in off the 'Hold' list. I think I am just going to submit another essay and a letter of rec. I don't know that there is much more we can do. I would love to get in though; it's my first choice... Good luck!

Means that they looked at your app adn couldn't make a decision based on just your numbers so they want to evaluate your app against the whole pool. I wrote a letter stating that they're my first choice and a little bit more about myself that wasn't contained in my personal statement. I'm not sure it if will help but I figured it couldn't hurt. I called the other day and the admissions lady wasn't very nice. She said "Didn't you receive a letter saying that you were placed in hold? There's nothing more I can tell you." I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Re: NYLS
Sunday, January 22 2006 at 07:00 PM

You should prob. be getting your letter very soon I imagine. As for the reputation of NYLS -- I have a friend who graduated in 2001 and is doing really well, he liked the school but said half the class didnt have jobs right after graduation. He, on the other hand, is a patent attorney so its different. Other than that the faculty was great according to him and you can do well if youre in top 10%. What are your thoughts? Where do you see yourself going?

Congrats!!! Im glad you got the answer finally, I hate the wait :) Im going to visit on apr 8th.. Its hard to say what Ill pick, still waiting on other schools. Love nyc though... as of right now im strongly considering USD but it may all change :)) Good luck w/ all your other apps, hope you get more acceptances.

Wednesday, January 11 2006 at 07:00 PM

Basically said that there was no way of telling what our chances were and when we would be notified. Their apps are down 8% as of right now but it seems like they have accepted alot of people thus far. I sent in another statement and had another LOR sent but I dont know how much it will help. In just didn't get a great feeling meeting with the lady with whom I spoke. We;ll see I guess; I loved the area and the general campus is nice even though the law school itself isnt quite as nice... I guess now we just wait... Good luck, though!

bigtex claimed to be hispanic. he wasn't. he (somehow) felt that because he was raised within the culture that he was of the culture. in my opinion what he did was unethical and he knew it. someone dimed him out to utex and they in turn dimed him out to other schools. he could have written a divercity statement but instead chose to check the 'box.' in my opinion he knew what he was doing and just wanted a boost to his #'s. he got caught and i bet he just might get a surprise in two years.

sorry
Saturday, September 17 2005 at 08:00 PM

i almost forgot.... congrats on your acceptances and good luck on your many remaining apps.

well
Saturday, September 17 2005 at 08:00 PM

I see higherlearning filled you in on the bigtex story, they pretty much caught him due to his posts on LSD and he had his acct matched up to lsn. Don't worry though, he was in a particularly difficult position because he blabbed his mouth and had a photo of himself up, as a white person but was claiming hispanic on apps, even though he supposedly was including a statement saying his stepdad was hispanic and so he felt hispanic. Congrats on your acceptances and good luck with the rest.

yup
Saturday, September 17 2005 at 08:00 PM

and i think he neglected to include any such addendum to texas. he was also a braggart about the whole thing, until he got caught.

re: Richmond

Thanks for the congrats...I did get a postcard from the SBA president last week (I think). I'm not sure when we're supposed to hear from them, but the two schools I got into want an answer by April 1. If UoR has a similar timetable, I imagine we'll hear back in a week or so. Best of luck to both of us.

Re; Miami
Monday, October 17 2005 at 08:00 PM

I didn't do anything. I was going to send them a letter praising the school but I didn't. I won't be getting any money from them so i doubt I'll go. 30k a year plus living expenses is hard to swallow. I'm still holding out for FSU or GSU (UGA if the stars align but highly unlikely). Good luck with your cycle.

yes I'm remaining on the waitlist. I think we have a decent chance of getting in because a lot of people seem to be withdrawing there, judging by this website. Good Luck to you!

Re: Miami Waitlist
Sunday, January 29 2006 at 07:00 PM

I don't know what "our" odds are because I have no idea how they structure the waitlist. If everyone has the same odds...who knows? Do they assign people numbers on the waitlist? For example, you are number 1 on the waitlist and I am number 89. You have better odds. Do they have a priority waitlist and a regular waitlist? If I knew the answers to these questions, then I could better answer your question. But, yes I am going to send my card in and join in the waitlist fun. The Miami waitlist (rejection) stung.

Looks like the decisions are starting to come through - Maybe you'll get better news than I did, but it looks like people with our LSAT's are getting waitlisted - On the plus side, they seemed optimistic about accepting folks from the list.

Monday, March 13 2006 at 07:00 PM

hey, i go to hofstra as an undergraduate. the campus is nice. i mean there really arent any complaints about it. the food isnt bad. the campus is divided in two halfs. one is a residential, one is academic. i heard good things about the graduate dorms. the student body seems to be somewhat displeased with the whole faculty and administration. mostly admin. ive been to the law school, since its on the regular campus. the court rooms and the facilities are gorgeous. 17 places to eat on campus. also, off campus apartments that are school owned. they arent bad. not the nicest area, but close enough to walk. we have a bus that goes to the train station, so its easy to get into the city. also a 40 minute commute, so internships during the summer are a definite. the girl i am seeing is a 2L at hofstra and she just seems slightly displeased. i mean, no one really has an direct complaints about anything specific. its just a general feeling of unhappiness. its a great school and decently ranked. i mean, im not sure how you will fair with the other schools, but if it comes down to hofstra or retaking the lsats and waiting, i would say go to hofstra and transfer after your first year if you are displeased. i think you would be able to get into a much better program after your first year. your lsat shows you are intelligent and your gpa may suggest that you just didnt apply yourself in your undergrad work. if you score well your first year, on top of the business you started you could pull fordham or atleast brooklyn with ease. good luck to you, i know i skipped around a little bit, but things kept comming up that i thought i should mention. if you have any questions that you want answered i attached my email address. i would suggest comming for a tour maybe. if you have any questions in specific, i can have the girl i can try to get some answers from my friends in the law school. good luck bro :)

Monday, March 13 2006 at 07:00 PM

Definitely drop me a line when you head out here. Umm.. ive heard pretty much the same thing about waitlists. I got waitlisted and deffered from a few, and then I sent them updates of my resume including new volunteer work and fall grades. someone told me that most of the people he spoke to who got in to a school of the list had sent that sorta update. i think if i dont here back next week from WM &WL i will put in my deposit. IF i get into GWU I will definitely attend there and just kiss my deposit good bye. good luck bro, i think you stand a shot to get called for Univeristy of Miami, and you will here back from WM by monday at the latest, or atleast thats what they are promissing. :)

Miami's student day was run really well I thought...and a tonnnnn of people showed up for it! I am putting deposits down on both UM and San Diego if I don't get into FL (which I don't think I will get into). I live in FL now, and so it'd be much easier for me to go to the U, but San Diego is so appealing too! Right now, I have absolutely no idea:) GOOD LUCK getting into the U...it's a beautiful campus, and a great city! --Kelly

Hey, I went to the admitted students day @ Miami, and just to give you a heads up, most people I talked to sounded like they were considering Miami if they didn't get into their top choices. So, that should open up quite a few spots I'm sure! Good Luck:) Maybe I'll see you @ the U next year:)

Yeah, I don't know about Miami yet! I doubt I will stay on the list, I plan to start making some calls next week so that way other people have some space, and then maybe, I will get some space at other schools too! Congrats on your acceptances - do you know where you want to end up yet?

Monday, March 13 2006 at 07:00 PM

congrats on the final decision. Hofstra isnt a bad school and they should be up to tier two by next year. Umm.. Long Beach is a nice area and slightly cheaper then living around here. It should only be a 15 minute drive to campus. I know friends lived there at points and made the drive. Pretty much anywhere you are going to be, you will need to drive to the train station and restaraunts though. the good thing is that they are all like five minutes away. if you didnt want to pay for parking either, you could drive to hofstra and take the bus to the train station. its a decent option. levi town (spelling?) is also right down the road. its an easy commute and affordable housing. hofstra is right next to hempstead. we are classified as living in it but or actually more in uniondale then hempstead. i would avoid housing in hempstead, although a few people from hofstra live just barely inside it. any place in the area isnt really a bad option. you could also live in queens. its about 20 minutes from here to parts of queens without traffic and then you could probably walk to restaurants and train stations or even the subway. I would stay locally so you dont deal with traffic though. Try and get a house in Long Beach with some people and i think you will be happy. Its not a bad school, and the starting salaries are pretty high. congrats bro and good luck. let me know if you have any other questions. i know this reply is all over the place, but i think all local housing is fairly comparable. just check it out for the location. hempstead can be ghetto in parts and so can uniondale. the rest is fine if you can find cheap enough housing.
