Additional info & updates

7/8 - Incredibly overdue update but Columbia it is!

5/9 - Came back from Europe to find a voicemail from UCLA's Critical Race Studies program saying they'd be willing to negotiate a full scholarship on my behalf (I had already submitted my withdrawal e-mail). This is tremendous news, esp. since this is the exact field I want to end up in someday. What to do, what to do...

5/2 - Sorry for the lack of updates! I still haven't made an official decision but will probably do so in the next few weeks (I know deadlines have passed but there are two schools that I would love to go to at this point, and it seems impossible to choose between them). Also received a hefty scholarship from NU, too.

1/31 - Dinged at Stanfurd. Oh well, probably wouldn't have gone anyways.

1/28 - In @ Columbia via the big green envelope! But...dinged at Chicago and WL'ed from UCLA. The latter, while confusing, doesn't bother me at all. Getting dinged from Chicago hurt pretty badly, though, since it'd recently become my #1 choice (I eventually want to teach). I think this probably signals the end of my cycle, so I hope y'all have gleaned something informative from my experience!

1/25 - In @ NU via e-mail! Let's hope I can squeeze out some scholarship money :).

1/14 - WL'ed from Penn via e-mail. I'm not disappointed, but I'm worried that this may signal the onset of bad news to come. Here's to hoping for some sympathy from Columbia/Chicago....

12/22 - Just got the big envelope at Mich. I'm 4-0 now! HYS are going to take a dump on my record, though. Bastards.

12/19 - Finally went to decision at UMichigan. Too bad I'll be 500 miles away for the next two weeks....

12/08 - In at NYU via snail mail. Nice to have some news after a long reprieve.

11/21 - In at Boalt! Phone call from xxx Alvarez (don't remember the first name). Totally unexpected phone call as I'd gone complete just a few days beforehand. Feeling like a million bucks right now :).

11/12 - In at Duke by e-mail; nothing personalized except for a note from Bill Hoye saying he was 'impressed by my academic record.' So far I'm 1-0 :).

11/06 - Just sent out my final application for Michigan. In retrospect, I think I unnecessarily rushed a few of my applications, but it feels good to be done anyways.

Just FYI - I did every optional essay to each school except for Northwestern's DS and Duke's 'Why us?'

Will update this as the 'completion' e-mails start to pour in. Thanks everyone for your help!

10/28 - W00t! Got my first application out the door, admittedly an easy one in Duke. I chose not to do the 'Why Duke' essay and submitted a general diversity statement instead. Likewise, I didn't tailor my PS or DS to their prompts (I might pay for this later, as their prompts were slightly different from what I'd provided) .

Hopefully some more applications to follow :).

9/26 - There's a good chance I may withdraw from 2-3 schools I've listed above, but that won't happen until I actually do my fair share of research. On the application front, I'm finishing up my personal statement (it will hopefully be done by the end of this week) and plan to get started on a 1-page diversity essay soon.

I think I'm still in good shape at this point.

I'd be happy to chat with you regarding my experience with Boalt's admissions process. Shoot me an email: brauerak (at) plu.edu.

I'll give you one point of my lsat if you give me .1 of your GPA. ;) I'm sure you're in for a great application season.

Thanks for the encouragement! I love Cal and it's great that u/g students like us to want to stay for another 3 years :) Best of luck with all your apps.

Good Luck!

We have a pretty similar list of schools (who doesn't?!?) I totally commiserate with your "I'm not going to do more work for Duke than I have to" sentiment...I sent them in first without any tweaking of my PS, and I didn't write a "why Duke," though I did apply for their joint JD/MA (psych)...so we'll see how that pans out. Good luck - I'll keep an eye out for you!

I like Boalt from what I've read (haven't been out to visit), so I might apply...but I was kind of hoping for a fee waiver. :P I guess I'll sit on it for a while, and once I get my PS finalized for all my other schools, I'll take a look at Boalt, too.

Congrats!

Honestly, I don't know why they put me on hold. I thought it might be my age, but I have a friend exactly my age (with worse numbers) who got accepted to Duke last year... so I have no idea. Congrats on your acceptance, though! Good luck to you this cycle :-D

statement

In your opinion, do you recommend that everyone write a diversity statement? Even if you are not exactly what might normally be considered diverse? (white, irish catholic)

Congrats!

Congrats on NYU!

on all of your acceptances and on acceptance to Michigan - you know that's what it is you may as well mark it as such!

yea man...
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

I completely understand what you are saying about marking it as an acceptance but I am pretty sure you know that it is. I know that you don't want to jinx yourself too! One of the schools that I am leaning heavily towards is the one we are discussing right now. I don't think I'll get in but I have some wicked soft factors and I think I wrote a bad ass Why Mich essay...I guess we'll see. I am definitely happy about 6-1 but I would love some T1 acceptances before Xmas! Happy holidays man - wish I could be in the states for them!

Congrats!

On Michigan!

Cornell...

...isn't really splitter-friendly, from what I've seen. It's too bad, I really do like Ithaca. Anyway, congrats on everything! (Especially Michigan!)

penn...

very surprised to see u waitlisted at penn--doesnt bode well for me..did you write the why penn essay?

thanks
Tuesday, September 25 2007 at 08:00 PM

Well, I think Norris would have gotten into Northwestern, but thanks anyways ;) I have been really taken aback by the early successes, I just feel more lucky than anything else. Congrats on your acceptances and good luck on the pending apps. I really like Boalt and Michigan, so even if it comes down to those two (it won't, youll get into other places) you have an enviable choice.

Congrats!

congratulations on all your acceptances. what was the acceptance letter from columbia dated, if you don't mind my asking?

Sorry...
Sunday, January 28 2007 at 07:00 PM

to hear about your Chicago ding, but congrats on CLS! If nothing else, you'll be closer to Elise, Lexington, Hudson, and the other guys.

question
Monday, May 21 2007 at 08:00 PM

congrats about Columbia, sorry to hear about Chicago. I'm a little puzzled that you'd be outright rejected there. Are your lsat/gpa numbers accurate? What do you think it was? Bad LOR?

congrats

Congrats on NYU, Columbia and NW! What is the deal with UCLA WL'ing (over)qualified candidates like you?

Congrats!
