Extra Curricular Information

Just for everyone's SA - My personal statement addressed my time over here in Afghanistan and I thought it was very well written (so did many others).
I had an addendum as I took the LSATs at a Forward Operating Base in Afghanistan which involved studying while on rigorous mission cycle. I also completed the entire application cycle from here as well which explains the a$$load of fee waivers. See below for some additional information.

-I plan on completing a JD/MBA and am uncertain as to what type of law I want to practice.

Recommendations from:
1) Jesuit Priest (my writing and literature teacher for 3 classes)
2) Company Commander from Afghanistan
3) Assistant Dean of Boston College
4) Research Mentor and Bio Instructor / Associate Dean

Additional info & updates

RUNNING TALLY: 19 - 8 - 7

I know, I know - I applied to an A$$LOAD of schools but why not - I got fee waivers from all but 3! Wouldn't you apply?

In at Florida State!
In at Penn State (2 for 2)!

12-06-07 - Rejected from UGA - it wasn't my top so I'm not too upset, but it is funny how they just straight tell you that you have been DENIED online what a slap - I figure it is the first of many, only time will tell.

12-11-07 - In at University of South Carolina w/ $45,000! Not a top choice but at least 3/4 is a pretty good percentage!

12-13-07 - In at Rutgers - Camden via email referencing my outstanding personal statement! Materials will be sent to my home in the US shortly along with a T-Shirt! 4/5...on a roll just waiting for the big ones to bite!!!

12-14-07 - In at University of Kentucky via email from dean of admissions saying that she would "love to have me there" again, not a top choice but at least its another +...5/6!!!

12-20-07 - Hi Santa - Yea, this is Drew, I know I have told people that I don't believe in you for years but I want you to know that I secretly still do. That being said, I don't want anything big and flashy for christmas, in fact all I want are a few top tier acceptances before the holiday begins. I don't feel that this is too much to ask for and I promise I have been a good boy! Thanks for the consideration and I hope you come through for me big guy!

12-21-07 - Accepted at Quinnipiac University by email - not surprised by this one, probably wouldn't go here but it is a nice school and close to home. Definitely a rising reputation and ranking.

12-23-07 - I've never hated weekends and holidays more!! Not only am I away from my family but law schools are closed so I can't even get decisions - the one thing that keeps me relatively sane...oh well - not too much longer of this crap! And happy holidays to you all, don't stress you could be where I am!

12-29-07 - I reiterate that I HATE the lull in the admissions cycle! This completely sucks. Not only did my christmas suck and surely my new years will too, I have to wait until the 2nd/3rd before any HOPE of hearing from a school. Oh well, I chose to apply!
Okay - just got word from my mom that I was waitlisted at University of Minnesota. My first one of these and it kind of sucks! I will be writing my LOCI and submitting it within the next day or two as this is a school that I would seriously consider going to if I got in. I guess we'll just have to see what happens! I think I would rather have heard nothing! LOCI submitted on 12-30; waiting again!

01-07-08 - Accepted at New York Law School with a Trustee Scholarship worth $30,000 per year! Not a bad offer but likely not a school I will attend. At least it is something else to consider and my record keeps getting stronger! COME ON T1!!!

01-11-08 - DECISION AT MICHIGAN!!! CROSSING MY FINGERS AND HOPING FOR MY FIRST T1...but judging by others' numbers it doesn't look promising!

01-17-08 - Still nothing from Michigan! This is killing me. Just came back in off of a mission and found out that I got accepted to U of Arizona!! FIRST TOP TIER AND A NICE SCHOLARSHIP! On a side note, I was also rejected from Northwestern but that was expected with my numbers...oh well, I'll take what I can get!

01-18-08 - Just received a rejection letter from George Mason. This one sucks because I thought I actually had a decent chance. Oh well, staying positive about the whole thing and hoping the next one is an acceptance!

01-21-08 - Just received word via email that I am a no-go at Michigan. It was a very nice email so while I am upset I cannot be too mad! I didn't have the numbers for it anyhow! This sucks - I need some more acceptances to make me smile again!

01-22-08 - GREAT DAY TODAY! To start I got a $25,000/yr scholarship to Quinnipiac and to top it off I got accepted to 3 schools:
1 = Tier 1 - University of Wisconsin - Madison
2 = Tier 2/3 - Temple and Michigan State
COULDN'T BE HAPPIER TODAY (Except if I got into a T14)
...UPDATE: WENT DECISION AT UVA - I'm guessing REJECTED but hoping for the best!

01-23-08 - OHIO STATE APPLICATION STATUS NOW READS "DECISION" - Yikes...that means I have 2 decisions in the mail right now!!
JUST RECEIVED MY ACCEPTANCE EMAIL FROM OHIO STATE!!!! WOHOOOOOOOO!!! 13 ACCEPTANCES!!

01-25-08 - REJECTED from UVA - I figured that would be the case as my numbers are too low! Oh well, I'm not bummed...I also decided to go ahead and apply to ND...we'll see what happens!

01-27-08 - ACCEPTED AT BOTH UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND AND UCONN!!! Great because UCONN is in-state for me and I am a veteran which means FREE RIDE!!!! VERY HAPPY!

01-28-08 - Waitlisted at U of Colorado - didn't want to go there anyhow just applied b/c it was free! W/D my name from the waitlist.
Also put on "HOLD" via email at UIUC. I definitely would like to continue to be considered as I think this is a great school! I guess we'll see!

02-02-08 - Accepted at University of Houston! Not a bad school and Houston is pretty nice but probably wouldn't pick it over UCONN. Came in a small envelope!

02-05-08 - Accepted at Loyola University - Chicago! I LOVE Chicago but not sure again if I would choose a T2 in a loaded market over a free highly reputable T1 in the area that I am very familiar with! NICE AGAIN TO HAVE ANOTHER OPTION SOMEWHERE IN A NEW AREA!

02-08-08 - Just withdrew from 10 schools so those of you on the waitlist or waiting to hear from any of the above that I have withdrawn from - I hope you get my slot! I wish you all the best of luck as it begins to look more and more like I will probably be at UCONN law next year!

02-23-08 - Oh well, rejected at GWU and UCLA - expected but it sucks to come back off of mission and find this out. Pretty much sold on UCONN though - time will tell!

03-08-08 - Waitlist at American - probably won't go there anyhow as I have pretty much decided where I will be attending. This week sucks - I hate this f'in country and just want to get back to the states: R.I.P. Bobby and Steve, you guys will be missed =-(

03-13-08 - Well good thing I have already made my decision because here came another rejection from UIUC. I guess it would suck a lot more if I had not been set on going to UCONN.

3-23-08 - William and Mary stopped fighting in order to send me my waitlist. This one was quickly withdrawn as UCONN here I come! Just wish you didn't screw up that basketball tourney!

3-26-08 - Today was somewhat bittersweet! I got waitlisted at both Notre Dame (thought I would be auto-reject) and Chicago-Kent (thought I was in) no big deal as I am UCONN bound. On the happy note; I found out that I may come home two weeks earlier than I thought from Afghanistan - THAT WOULD BE SO AWESOME!!!!!! I will know for sure in 24-48 hrs!

3-26-08 - Yet another piroity waitlist - IU-Bloomington. Again, no sweat but 7 F'IN WAITLISTS - GEEZ! Make up your damn minds!!!!

3-27-08 - In off of the waitlist at Indiana University - Bloomington! I got an email saying that the admissions committee met and decided to admit me off of the waitlist which is great news! BUT THERE IS BETTER NEWS...WAIT FOR IT....WAIT FOR IT...
I GET TO COME HOME 2 WEEKS EARLIER!!! THE FLIGHTS GOT PUSHED UP TO LET US COME BACK TO THE STATES! I LEAVE IN A FREAKIN WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
....and, in addition, I just got something for admitted students at University of Florida. I guess that means I got in...won't go but that's not too bad!!!! Another acceptance!

3-28-08 - REJECTED at Cornell (at least I think). I was expecting this one so not too upset. I think that was the only school that could have swayed my loyalty to UCONN! UCONN HERE I COME!

3-29-08 - OKAY I WAS WRONG! I was placed on RESERVE at Cornell - I thought that I would be an auto-ding. Pretty happy about that!

4-25-08 - Got home from Afghanistan 2 weeks ago - just waiting for August to get here so I can put 1L behind me one day at a time! GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE WITH FINAL DECISIONS!!!!

Hey! Since it looks like we'll be applying to some similar schools I'm adding you to my watchlist. I have no doubt your military service will help you in the admissions process. However, I'm a military brat so I'm a bit biased.

Yeah, a lot of mine are reaches trying to get into the T14. I got fee waivers from quite a few schools in the 50-100 range, along with emails suggesting full scholarships, but the goal is to try and get into a T14 school. I'm not sure what your chances are like at some of the lower schools on your list, the lower LSAT might hurt you. Where are you hoping to get in?

Congrats!
Saturday, October 20 2007 at 08:00 PM

there's quite a handful of bio majors this year it seems. I'm interested in the IP scene, in particular patent law. We'll have to see how it goes. Sometimes I wonder if it'll look bad if I have lower scores than their typically accepted and they'll look at my science major and think I didn't have enough exposure to pre-law-like stuff. But then again, paranoia has always been my best friend. -N

Nice List

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I'd be a more than excited if I could get into Miami. Congrats on FSU...I don't think I have a shot there, but it's not a big deal to me, I really don't want to go there. Just applying there for shits and giggles. Good luck the rest of the cycle though, I will keep an eye on your account!

for the encouragement. I hope I get in most everywhere, but if I don't get at least 1 rejection, I'll feel like I didn't take enough risks. How do you have enough time for that many applications?!? =) Good luck!

Realistic Number 1?
Monday, September 17 2007 at 08:00 PM

It's tough to tell. I did ED to Columbia and I saw 3 candidates from last year's LSN with my numbers who got in through ED. So I guess there is at least "some" realism in hoping to make it there. Then it would be NYU, then Penn or Chicago, and then it will depend a lot on money...

Thats funny
Monday, October 29 2007 at 08:00 PM

I like your AF song, brings back memories. LOL. I know that this is the school for me. I figure why waste my time to apply to other schools when I know I am doing to get accepted in NCCU law.

Thanks!

Thanks for the well wishes. I was disappointed with my LSAT performance but it is not going to keep me from trying for some top schools. Hopefully my "soft factors" will kick in. If not, I can't say I didn't try! Good luck to you with the rest of your cycle and congrats on being 2 for 2.

Good luck to you, too!

Thanks for the good wishes! You're right about the 'reaches' I applied to - I decided I might as well go for them since I was already applying to a bunch of places. Congrats on Penn State - I'm hoping to hear from them really soon. Looks like we applied at about the same time and you had a very quick response so that gives me some hope. Good luck with hearing back from the rest of your schools!

thanks a lot! i have a good feeling about a top tier acceptance for you before 08 - i was not expecting anything AT ALL from berkeley before the new year, but here i am! good luck!

thanks
Wednesday, July 18 2007 at 08:00 PM

whoa! lots of schools...do you have a top choice? I just think that I wasn't that well-spoken, didn't do a great job of answering a few tough questions to which I should've had better answers, and in general didn't do anything to set myself apart, which I *totally* could've if my heart hadn't been pounding...I have so much to say about my college experience and my work life since, but I just stammered like an idiot. Anyway, I'll live. Thanks for all your confidence, even if I'm not sure on what it's based :).

:)
Wednesday, October 24 2007 at 08:00 PM

Love your last post! Best of luck and hope you get all the "presents" you asked for. Seems like you have an awesome streak going anyways!

Eh...
Friday, September 08 2006 at 08:00 PM

I feel confident about my prospects, but marking it as an 'acceptance' when many people have already been rejected would be both presumptuous and slightly tactless. My goodness you have a lot of schools, though. Is there any school you're particularly leaning toward? Congrats on the schools you've made so far, though. You have a nice 6-1 :).

Thanks!
Saturday, November 24 2007 at 07:00 PM

University at Buffalo Law School
Friday, January 12 2007 at 07:00 PM

First, congrats on your acceptances so far !!! Next, I would invite you to seriously consider applying to the University at Buffalo Law School. It is a strong Tier 2 school...higher rated than Penn State !!! The tuition, even for out of state students, is fantastic. As a first year student there all my profs are either Ivy League or Top 10 grads ! Again, best wishes to you !

congrats again!
Tuesday, December 04 2007 at 07:00 PM

Even more acceptances for you! Congrats!

good luck!
Monday, November 12 2007 at 07:00 PM

I know, I was hoping I'd hear back from at least one school by the end of this week :( But congrats on all your acceptances!! Maybe next week will bring more news (good or bad. . . I just want some!) Thanks for the wishes, and good luck on the rest of your schools!

condolence
Sunday, September 30 2007 at 08:00 PM

hey thanks for the condolences about george mason. i am still pretty surprised. i think it may be more a matter of the school trying to up its status by admitting less people this year, perhaps. i only considered it a safety because i applied part time where my numbers were above their averages. c'est la vie, good luck the rest of the cycle.

Thanks
Friday, January 11 2008 at 07:00 PM

Thanks!

Hey man, thanks for the congratulations - I was suprised myself to see that message. I've seen you posting on other's comments and want to wish you the best of luck. Your attitude is very refreshing during a time where stress seems to dominate -- impressive! And it sounds like your serving our country, which I think is great. I have several friends in the various services and appreciate every day the things y'all do for our country. Keep me updated, best of luck the rest of the way!

haha thanks for the kind words, best of luck to you too! I'm gonna assume you're from Boston, even though the Rockets are gonna top the Celtics in the finals this year :) As far as BU vs BC.. I used to be in ACC country and BC left me with a bad taste haha. I read that BU was 5min walking to Fenway Park and I was sold. If you know much about either of those schools though I'd love to hear your insight if you wanna e-mail me. Oh yeah, and I don't think you applied to enough schools!

I'm sure that you are going to get many more acceptances. I too am really waiting on IU and UF. I'm still waiting on Tennessee too - at least you're in there.

hey Drew, Thanks for the kind words. Good luck to you as well. I actually didn't get into GM either, but I forgot about that b/c I wasn't going to attend anyway and they don't really have a public interest program. Much love to the big ten schools. Good luck.

Hey
Monday, July 23 2007 at 08:00 PM

Best of luck to you as well. Yeah, I'm hoping my GPA will do me some good in this whole process--even if my LSAT score is a bit of a setback. I probably won't be hearing from anywhere for awhile, so I'll be checking up on how everyone else is doing for the next month or so.

Did you receive any kind of scholarship offer from MSU? Did they just send you a small envelope?

Congrats on Wisc! With all these acceptances you must have something pretty special so I bet you've got an acceptance coming from OSU...

I'm such an idiot on this LSN mumbo-jumbo. I responded to your post on my page ON MY OWN PAGE! (oops). Anyway, I'm copying and pasting below, and adding a CONGRATS on Wisconsin! I know a couple of 1Ls at UConn Law and they LOVE it. Strong student body, great professors, not overly competitive. I'd have applied there, but I lived in CT for 3 years from 1999-2002, and next year I'm trying to be somewhere new for me. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you- **WISCONSIN!!! Awesome! My whole family went to UW(UG, tho). There is no better place in the country than Madison, if you can handle the weather in Jan/Feb. Do you have a new #1 choice today?

congrats!!!

thanks! i heard from my mom . . . j/k. my permanent and current address are the same (for in state tuition purposes at a couple of places), so i'm not sure which one they meant to send it to. according to my mom, it came in a small envelope that looks like a rejection until you see the tiny "congratulations!" printed in a corner. also, i've seen my s.o.'s package from them, and they send a big folder later and an additional mailing inviting people to apply for scholarships. good luck to you, too! you've got wisco already which is one of my faves, so you're sitting pretty as it is IMO.

thanks
Saturday, December 15 2007 at 07:00 PM

thanks and good luck to you too! Maryland and GW both seem really weird about timing of acceptances, but hopefully you'll get some news soon :)

thanks!

Monday, October 22 2007 at 08:00 PM

Congrats to you as well! Still uncertain about where I would choose to attend. I imagine it will be difficult for me to rank them much until I know fully what my options are. Good luck with the rest of your cycle.

Thanks! If your not an LT, thanks Sir. I cannot wait until I am a civilian again either. Where are you stationed? I have a cousin who is married to a guy who I believe was in the 82AB... he was at Ft Bragg, in his last assignment.

Wanted to keep you posted...rejected from UCLA...but all I care about is Fordham....this wait is killing me! Congrats on UConn, I know you were pumped about that! BC bball is sucking!

Sunday, January 06 2008 at 07:00 PM

good luck to you too!!! I see we have similar numbers, so I'm going to add you onto my watch list! and congrats on so many acceptances!!

Whats your secret?
Wednesday, December 19 2007 at 07:00 PM

How're you getting accepted to so many good schools? I'm jealous.

Congrats
Wednesday, December 19 2007 at 07:00 PM

On everything so far, but especially Conn... Having a full-ride option at a T1 school is amazing. I'm sure there is plenty more goodness to come.

Hey there!
Thursday, February 08 2007 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on your schools man! Maryland and UCONN, very nice. Ya, UF is taking their sweet time. Tulane is my #1, have friends who live there and my brother went to grad school there as well, but it will cost me a pretty penny to attend. Tulane is the most expensive, but most flexible after graduation school I have. I wish I could push them for a few thousand bucks, maybe 5K a year, is that too much to ask? haha

Thanks!
Sunday, October 28 2007 at 08:00 PM

THanks for the Kudos. I keep jokingly telling my roomate that they must be sending the ding letters to the wrong address! You're really cleaning house this cycle too! Whats your first choice? Can you tell me anymore about Quinn? I don't really know that much about it. Finally, I'm sorry you feel that way about the Patriots. In the midwest we lovingly refer to the Pats as the Yankees of football. But then again if you are a Yankees fan this joke has no punchline. Seriously though, thanks!

UConn
Saturday, May 26 2007 at 08:00 PM

Monday, January 07 2008 at 07:00 PM

Thanks man...Yeah I figure even if the rest of the schools don't work out, I'm going to have some tough choices. Looks like you will too.

Thanks Drew! Congrats to you as well, your cycle has been great! My grandma is from Tennessee and I really like it down there, so I was happy to get it.

Thursday, June 28 2007 at 08:00 PM

for the congrats on uconn! congrats to you on uconn and all your other acceptances! uconn is probably where I will end up too. Im an in-stater but finishing up school in DC now. Where in CT are you from? Good luck with the rest of your schools!!

Thanks!
Monday, July 09 2007 at 08:00 PM

For the congrats but I am still heartbroken over the Giants victory. I'm not diehard Pats (actually diehard Jets as weird as that is and I hate the Giants) but I love history and I love Michigan (Brady is a Wolverine hence my interest in his success). Life sometimes can put sports into perspective, but hey GO CELTICS!!!

Thursday, September 06 2007 at 08:00 PM

The wait is driving me nuts, so thanks for the good wishes! You've got a ton of $$$ and nice schools already. Hope everything works out for the best!

Waiting!
Monday, December 03 2007 at 07:00 PM

Waiting stinks! It looks like you're doing really well. Indiana and UF are really stringing us out.

Arizona
Tuesday, June 26 2007 at 08:00 PM

You've got to be the most popular person on this site! How did you hear from Arizona? I'm starting to get nervous because I still havnen't heard from alot of places!!!

Congratulations!
Wednesday, January 30 2008 at 07:00 PM

On a great cycle so far! I got into Quinnipiac with $$, too. Have you visited? What do you know about it? Just wondering. Take care and be safe.

thanks
Thursday, January 10 2008 at 07:00 PM

hey dude, i just got the packet monday, but with no scholarship info. my top choices are ucla, usc, and texas, but those are pretty long shots so i probably wont get in. my parents are pressuring me to go to iowa since its a really good school, but pepperdine is pretty tempting, esp with the $$ offer.

Congratulations! You have so many choices already - if it ended right now, where would you be going?

Go Huskies!
Sunday, July 22 2007 at 08:00 PM

I'm so happy that you're in at a school you really like. I won't see you at UConn if that's where you go, but maybe I'll see you in court someday ;-)

Fee waivers
Friday, February 08 2008 at 07:00 PM

Im curious airborne, how did you manage to swing all those fee waivers? I't love to try my chances at a few more schools but its getting pricey! Congrats on all the accepts

Classy
Monday, May 28 2007 at 08:00 PM

Classy move to withdraw so others can have the shot. Thanks very much for that.

Sigh!
Tuesday, January 15 2008 at 07:00 PM

There went my sweep... came home to a Stanford rejection letter last night! Good luck with your cycle :) You applied to more than I did (AMAZING!!!).

Gracias
Friday, February 08 2008 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the help. You saved me about $200 in fees!

.
Saturday, January 05 2008 at 07:00 PM

Nice list of acceptances there. You've got quite a decision to be making in the next month. I'm sure where ever you end up you'll be happy though--it's a great list.

.
Monday, April 16 2007 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on all of your AWESOME acceptances! Would you mind withdrawing from Wisconsin if you're set on UConn?

UConn
Tuesday, November 06 2007 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on all the acceptances! I'm still not sure where I'll end up in the fall. I don't know very much about UConn, but I'm planning to visit sometime soon! Good luck with everything!

Hi
Sunday, September 09 2007 at 08:00 PM

Hey there! How goes it? Sorry about UCLA and GW. I got dinged by GW myself a couple of weeks ago. Nicest rejection letter I've gotten though. :) Are you still planning on UConn?

who knows
Sunday, September 09 2007 at 08:00 PM

I have no idea what I'm going to do. Start visiting places and probably make my decision that way. I would still really like to hear good news from IU.

I was in Iraq in Aug last year for only two weeks before getting hit by an IED and flown out with a piece of metal sticking out of my skull. I lost my driver and am only recently starting to feel normal again. I wish you and your guys the best... My unit is slated to come home next month and I pray every day for no bad news...

Thursday, January 17 2008 at 07:00 PM

Congrats man
Wednesday, May 03 2006 at 08:00 PM

How'd you decide on UConn? I would have had a really hard time turning down Arizona with that kind of money.

I just noticed that you're on reserve at Cornell. I think that's a huge accomplishment in and of itself (especially considering that you're low numbers wise). That's really a testament to .... Well, anyway, ... congrats, buddy.

Fee Waivers
Sunday, October 05 2008 at 08:00 PM

Hey dude, I am stuck in Ramadi, and have already applied to several schools, howd you go about getting fee waivers for being deployed?
