ADVICE
1. Network- Get out to different events that you know law school representatives will be at and strike up a conversation. In a few of my acceptance phone calls/personal notes on my acceptance letters I heard "I remembered you from X" or "X told me about how impressed he/she was with you, I look forward to meeting you".
***The key to networking (after making the first impression) is the FOLLOW UP EMAIL.

2. Leverage for more money!

Worked offers up from Duke, Michigan (started with no money), Berkeley, Chicago (started at 30k), and Penn.

--Additional funds were garnered mostly through matching/competing scholarships.

Additional info & updates

Don't let anyone tell you that your not good enough. Anything is possible! I want people to live vicariously through me as I did others. I scoured websites like this one and TopLawSchools looking at other URM's and seeing how there cycles went. Let me do the same for you!

Remember, anything is possible. Who Am I? I Am A Champion. (sorry to be cheesy, it's just a little motivation)

[Thanks to the LSAC fee waiver, I was able to apply to a bunch of schools].
**Decision dates are as of the date on the acceptance note, not the date received (if) by snail mail.

ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE. IN THE FALL I WILL BE ATTENDING HARVARD LAW SCHOOL. ALL PRAISE GOES TO GOD. REMEMBER, THAT ANYTHING CAN BE DONE THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS US.

(written prior to my HLS acceptance after deciding on Penn)My cycle is now complete and I have to decided to attend UPenn the fall. Extremely blessed. Good luck and Godspeed to those still in the midst of this application cycle and also for those in application seasons to come. Hopefully this profile will help someone in some way.

6/15: KB2!!!! Harvard it is. Unbelievable. Received an invitation (later in day) to remain on Columbia WL but withdrew. HLS it is!

6/13: KB1.

6/12: KB1 Invite.

5/1: Waitlisted at Harvard.

4/13: Waitlisted at Columbia.

4/10: Withdrew my app from Northwestern(hold), Cornell (reserve), and NYU (waitlist).

4/5: Competing scholarship from Chicago 60k.

4/3: Matching scholarship from Duke 90k and competing scholarship from Michigan for 93k.

4/2: Received matching scholarship from Berkeley of 75k & 18k need based. 93k total.

3/30: Asked Stanford for an expedited decision due to upcoming deadline. Received rejection via email, followed up by letter.

3/18: Received a solid package from Penn today. Will not post since it is need mixed with merit.

3/07: Offered 81k over three years from Duke. Subsequently notified Penn and applied for the matching scholarship at Berkeley.

3/05: Michigan matched Cornell's 30k over three years.

3/02: Placed on reserve by Cornell.

2/29: Offered 30k over three years by UChicago.

Done with Lent! Posting all updates now!
_________________________________________________

2/21: Giving up LSN for lent, will update everything in April.

2/15: In at Duke via email.

2/9: First rejection of the cycle from Yale. Dated 2/3.
Saw online that my decision was mailed from UC Davis. Accepted and dated 2/8.

2/6: Received acceptance via snail mail from USC, letter dated 2/2.

2/1: Held at Northwestern.

1/18: Got a call from UPENN! I'm in. Sheesh!!! Also got an acceptance from Fordham.

1/13: CHICAGO!!! CHICAGO!!! CHICAGO!!! WOWWWWWW. Also, HELD at Harvard!!!! Not a straight rejection.

1/12: In at UVA! Received an email saying they wanted to talk about my application, I called and got the congratulations. After not hearing for a while, and seeing alot of action (both acceptances and rejections) on LSN, I sent in a LOCI. Hoping I get some good scholarship money.

1/10: Withdrew from Maryland. They sent me an email to schedule my interview for a full tuition scholarship. However, at this point, I have the leverage needed from (higher ranked) schools like BU and Illinois.

1/09: Got back to my campus mailbox at school. The highlight was $105k from BU! Will look to get all schools 14 and below to match this offer.

1/06: In at Illinois via email with 75% tuition. This should help me in leveraging.

12/27: Accepted at WashU in St. Louis via email!

12/21: Accepted at Boston College Law. Also received a call from UGA giving me an additional 5k per year on top of the tuition equalization after telling them about my acceptances to Michigan, Berkeley, Georgetown and full ride to St. John's. So that's $32k in total from them.

12/20: After almost three weeks of no decisions except for a hold at Cornell, I received a full tuition Ron Brown scholarship from St. John's via email. Also a phone call from Boston University! Accepted. Invited for Leadership Scholarship at Maryland, in the amount of full tuition.

12/15: First "bad news" of the cycle. My early action application at Cornell was held, and pushed back to regular decision. Hoping to get some good news from other schools this upcoming week before Christmas break.

I've been accepted to some AMAZING schools thus far. I am really hoping to be pleasantly surprised and get a really good financial aid package somewhere. As of now with my current options (money aside, since I haven't received packages yet) I would say Michigan and Berkeley are definitely my top choices. Hopefully more top schools will want me and make my decision an even tougher one. TRUST GOD, FOR HE IS GOOD.

11/30: In at Michigan via ASW! (I was able to login to log into the admitted students website) WOOOOOO. God is good.

11/28: In via snail mail at Maryland.

11/25: In via snail mail at George Washington.

11/21: Just got a call from Dean Tom. UNREAL. UC Berkeley definitely looks promising. I'm in love with the school.

11/19: In today at Georgetown via snail mail!! It was dated 11/14, and had a nice note from Dean Cornblatt. Soooo hype about this one.

11/17: Dean's Excellence Scholarship from Texas for $36k over three years, and a Tuition Equalization Scholarship for the first year at UGA worth $18,000.

**Grateful for everything thus far!!

11/14: Accepted at UGA via ASW 11/14. Just randomly logged on to the ASW and saw this little box saying congratulations.

11/9: Accepted at Texas via phone call 11/9. (Applied Early Decision Non Binding).

11/2: Accepted at UCLA via phone call.

WOW! Congrats on UCLA. We have similiar stats, I was going to apply there but was afraid I wouldn't get in! I'm definitely considering applying now! Good luck on the rest of your cycle!! :)

Friday, November 04 2011 at 08:00 PM

Thanks for the congratulations! Don't be afraid to try, the worst that could happen is they say no! I have a solid all around package, and will bring diversity to the school and I'm sure you would too. So as long as your LSAT won't bring them down (which a 159 that we have certainly won't) schools are really eager and willing to accept us. Goodluck with the rest of your cycle as well, and congratulations on your acceptances thus far!

good

Not only do you have similar stats as me but you're definitely going with the shotgun approach to applications as well haha. Congrats so far and hopefully the rest of this cycle will exceed your expectations.

UGA

I'm hoping that this cycle does exceed my expectations also! Hopefully there will be some nice surprises in the form of acceptances and financial aid packages! Definitely took the shotgun approach, especially since I had the LSAC fee waiver.

Cheeeeesy!
Sunday, July 24 2011 at 08:00 PM

Cheesy is good! I like to see people trying to inspire/encourage others instead of beating them down like SEVERAL people that troll this website try and do! Congrats on your acceptances thus far. I know more is to come for you! P.s. It ain't easy being cheesy! (Ok. So I'm the cheesy one now for quoting a cheeto's commercial. Lol.)

Wednesday, October 19 2011 at 08:00 PM

What did you discuss in your personal statement to give you edge? How did you get into schools that won't even accept students in the low 160s with a 159?

Holistic Approach
Friday, November 04 2011 at 08:00 PM

Law schools aren't lying when they say that they have a holistic approach. With a strong academic record, strong personal statement, evidence of how you can bring diversity to the classroom through a strong diversity statement, stellar letters of recommendation, a track record making an impact on campus and within the community, and a timely application, schools will sometimes look past the LSAT. And you have to remember these schools do take people without 170s. Yale's lowest was 157, Chicago's was 154, Stanford's was 157 two years ago. Berkeley has students in the 140's in their incoming class. I'm sure the same goes for other top schools (most likely not to the extent of Berkeley, but you get my point), but I don't know their ranges off the top of my ahead. If you have a well put together applications, schools will notice. Hope this helps.

Congrats on the successful cycle so far! I took the LSAT in February for the first time and it didn't feel like it was a 165+ performance on my part so i'm taking inspiration from your success. If you have the time, please shoot me an email with some more info on the type of networking/events you recommended on this page and the approach you took in writing your personal statement.

Tuesday, October 11 2011 at 08:00 PM

I can't wait until Easter so I can see what developments there have been with your cycle!
