Community involvement and various volunteer projects

I don't think my softs are standout, other than my interesting background. I think that my experiences will add a 'diverse' perspective in multiple ways, so maybe that helps...

I've finally decided on University of Michigan! I'll be notifying them and withdrawing from everywhere else this week. That should free up a lot of scholarship money! :-D

Received the call that I've been selected for a scholarship program at NYU!!! I have to let them know by Thursday. No pressure! In case you're interested, it's the Law and Business Scholars Program.

Received scholarship letter from Chicago today (dated March 19, stupid slow international mail)! Yay!!!

Maybe it's just me, but it's a little irritating when people leave messages asking you to withdraw. Clearly people don't just hold on to acceptances to hoard them like gold! There isn't a single school that I have been accepted to that I'm 100% sure I wouldn't attend, and until I am sure I will not be withdrawing. If you don't like it, tough!

Just got my rejection from Yale. Oh well, it's pretty much expected. On the other hand, it sucks that my final decision was a rejection. I kind of wished that I hadn't applied so that I would have had a full sweep! :-/

Also got some scholarship info from Duke (not nearly enough, will be withdrawing soon) and GULC (half Dean's Scholarship). I'll still be using that Duke flash drive though!

Just got the call from Dean Perry! I actually missed the call because I was down the hall, but as soon as I saw the number, Chicago immediatly came to mind. I listened to the message and knew I was in! I called back and we talked briefly, and now I have her direct number for any questions. Yay!

My letter from Columbia was sent via email since I'm international.
I just got the call from Dean Zearfoss informing me that I am the recipient of a full Darrow!!! WOW! I don't even know what to say. She mentioned that she wanted me to be chosen and was glad that the faculty committee agreed!

Removed W&L from the list, since I never sent in the dean's certification.

Came home to an acceptance letter from Vandy dated December 20! It had arrived sometime last week! Schools that send letters via international priority mail (Michigan) are definitely appreciated!

IN AT HARVARD! Got the call when I was about to get on the Space Mountain ride at Disney! Soooooo awesome! This has certainly made my decision a lot harder...

Got the Harvard call today while I was at an outlet mall. I think it went ok, though I felt that I could have elaborated more on my job and activities. The salespeople must have thought I was crazy, walking around their store on my cell phone!

In at Northwestern via email!

Just got the Penn call!!!! I'm so excited! I wanna make tons of noise, but of course I can't since I'm at work. YAY PENN!

Came home to acceptances from Duke, Michigan and Georgetown! I'm beyond excited to get my first three in the same day, especially since I saw a small envelope (complete letter) from Michigan first! YAY!!!

Complete at Columbia! Now if I could start getting some decisions... ;-)

Decision email from Duke!!! Hope the postal service is fast!

Complete at Vandy! Still haven't started my NYU essay, though. What am I doing?

First complete at Georgetown! Whoo hoo!

The only application left to go is NYU. I have another essay to write for them, and just don't know how to start it. I'm not going to apply to any other schools unless they send me fee waivers. I'm happy with the list of schools that I'm applying to and hopefully they'll be happy with me! :-)

Finally sent off the first of my applications! YAY!

UVA fee waiver

Vandy fee waiver

Northwestern fee waiver

Columbia fee waiver!

I finally finished a draft of my ps. Though it needs a looooot of editing, I think it's a good start and I'm well on my way to having the first of my apps out before the end of the month.
I'm still trying to decide on a strategy for when I send out my apps. Do I send them all at once, wait until I hear from the early ones before sending another round, send the ones that I really want first, etc? I kind of want to wait a little on Yale and Harvard, as they are my biggest reaches and I want to make sure that my statements are completely polished before taking that step.

Just found out that I've got fee waivers from NYU and Michigan. YAAAAAAAAAY!

**Received is when they received my report
**Decision is the date on the acceptance letter

I'm sure you're going to dominate this app cycle. Do you really need that many backups?

- mike245
  • Yes!
  • Friday, June 30 2006 at 07:25 AM

I do need that many backups! :-) Jk. I'll probably apply to the safeties based on what fee waivers I get. And of course I have to apply to my alma mater.

  • Sunday, August 06 2006 at 03:13 PM

Hey CC, I didn't improve by that much, as my diagnostic score was in the upper 160s. I can tell you what worked for me in terms of lsat prep. PM me on lsd if you're interested.

  • question about lsat...
  • Tuesday, August 08 2006 at 10:49 AM

How long did you study for? I saw that u were working ft whiel studying and was wondering what it took for u to get a 175 (Nice!!!). Thanks !

  • lsat
  • Tuesday, August 08 2006 at 12:13 PM

I studied on and off since about January. I used Nova, LSAC Superprep, Kaplan 180 (not recommended) and 20something preptests. I wouldn't recommend studying that long because there was a period of a month or two when I was burnt out and hardly did anything. Just take your time and you'll be fine.

Hey, you're going to do great this cycle, and that 175 is smokin' hot for sure. I never realized that you are from the islands...I am like an adopted son to some St. Lucians and Dominicans that live nearby. Good luck for sure, but I really don't think you'll need any luck to succeed.

  • Michigan
  • Friday, September 08 2006 at 06:10 AM

Are you writing the Michigan optional essays by the way? I have a solid Why Michigan (my parents live there) already, but I don't know if I should write the other one. And good luck during the cycle!

  • Go for it
  • Monday, September 25 2006 at 10:43 AM

Send out all the apps as soon as they are ready. no doubt. If you get into one of the early schools youll deal with it howver you have to, unless its binding then you have no choice, like columbia. In regards to Yale try to get in as early as possible because they have such a small class. I applied late last year and i think it hurt me so ended up on the waitlist, though obviously you never know. Good Luck im sure youll get in almost everywhere.

  • Friday, November 03 2006 at 11:49 AM

I figure as long as you do some of the optional essays, you'll probably be okay. Anything to make it seem like you didn't just rubberstamp another app... But really, what do I know? Michigan seems cool, though! I'm liking it more and more.

relieved! I just have to send out BC--like you, I'm not feeling the idea of writing another essay (I have to write a statement of purpose). Question about Vandy: Did you talk to any of the blk students there? What did they have to say about the school? 39/190 students of color is kinda bleh--but I like what i hear about Vandy and I would go there if Ididn't get into a t14.

You got into some great schools. Why the lack of fee waivers?

- John
  • Fee Waivers
  • Wednesday, January 17 2007 at 08:40 AM

Not sure why I didn't get them from Penn or GULC, because they were definitely giving them to people in my range. Not surprised about Chicago, as they seem to very selective about waivers. Then again, for most of them you had to mail in a cheque. Part of me wonders if somehow they sent a waiver that was lost through the intricacies of international mail.

It was really great to talk to you over frosty + dinner yesterday. Are you headed to Boston this coming weekend? If so (and you have the time/feel at all inclined) shoot me an email to let me know your thoughts about the visit. I can't go unfortunately, but would be interested to hear how you think it compares to this past weekend. IMHO, Michigan ASW = pretty sweet. Also, when I'm taking the CFA exam in June, I'll be sure to write extra legibly as I'm now aware that your mom might be reading it...hah!

Aw Moni, I'm sorry Yale ruined your clean sweep - they don't know what they're losing! Congrats on an amazing cycle and good luck deciding- you deserve all your success! :-)

Hi there! I found out about the Sharp over the phone. I don't know if they have notified everyone yet who received it, so best of luck! You have some amazing options regardless, so good luck deciding :)

  • Quit hoarding
  • Sunday, April 01 2007 at 10:10 AM

Why don't you start dropping the schools that you know you will not go to like Northwestern? Instead of hoarding like a chipmunk hoards nuts. You can only go to one law school at a time!

- John
  • She is still not sure
  • Sunday, April 01 2007 at 10:26 AM

She stated that " There isn't a single school that I have been accepted to that I'm 100% sure I wouldn't attend," and until then, she wants to keep her options open.

  • What a bunch of bull!
  • Sunday, April 01 2007 at 10:35 AM

No one in his or her right mind gives up mega-money from Michigan for Northwestern. This 100% statement is just a weak excuse to hoard for her ego. Just reading her posts you get the feel of just how big her ego per her bitching about her Yale rejection!

  • Decisions...
  • Monday, April 02 2007 at 05:47 AM

Good job John on bitching about things that you know nothing about. Personal factors that I'm certainly not going to discuss on lsn keep Northwestern in the running, especially since money is often negotiable. I'm sorry that you didn't get into the schools that you wanted, but that certainly isn't my fault and I somehow doubt my single acceptance is barring your way.

- Monili
  • What ego
  • Monday, April 02 2007 at 07:31 AM

You are assuming I "didn't get into the schools " I wanted: What ego! Its my fiance that happens to be a URM on Waitlist at NW. You are good at excuses, but I am willing to bet the farm that you don't choose NW over Chicago, Michigan, and/or Harvard. Enjoy your little ego trip.

- John
  • You're right, what ego??
  • Monday, April 02 2007 at 07:57 AM

Because of course the assumption that someone is waiting on a school because they bitch to someone else about not withdrawing is totally unwarranted. Must be my ego talking. You could bet that I don't go to any single school that I've been accepted to and there's a 10/11 chance that you'd be right. Not exactly going out on a limb there buddy.

  • Friday, April 06 2007 at 07:58 PM

hi monili, first, congratulations on a wonderful cycle. you are really doing it and i'm very proud to see such accomplishment. i will be applying next year and have a few questions about gpa. could you please explain why the difference between a 3.7 and a 3.3. feel free to email. i have a 3.3 ugpa and lsdas gpa and i am wondering if it will keep me out of a higher ranked law school.

of congratulations on your acceptances; I share your feelings that it is so hard to narrow down the options, especially when they are all wonderful and offer so many varied programs. Good luck with your decision!

Moni: Thanks for the kind words. I am sure you will have a ridiculous time. It was such a hard decision, which is why I was thrilled to find out a buddy of mine from UG will be going there next fall too. Now I will have to come visit, especially for the ND Michigan game! BTW, I'm typing this on a study-break from all of the CFA studying...less than three weeks and it will all be over! Best of luck and talk to you later,
