I like pugs. A lot. Much in the same way Mitch Hedberg felt about koalas:

"My apartment is infested with koala bears. It's the cutest infestation ever. Way better than cockroaches. When I turn on the light, a bunch of koala bears scatter, but I don't want them too. I'm like, "Hey... Hold on fellows... Let me hold one of you, and feed you a leaf." Koala bears are so cute, why do they have to be so far away from me. We need to ship a few over, so I can hold one, and pat it on its head."

Hence, pugattack.

I am the queen of waitlists.

5/3 - sent in my deposit to USC.

5/6 - withdrew from Hastings. This was a really hard decision as I liked Hastings a lot, but just fell in love with USC when I visited. My heart hurts.

5/7 - twiddling thumbs wishing I'd hear from one of my waitlists...

5/13 - Holy crap in at UCLA off the WL!!!! Phone call in the afternoon...on a Sunday..and mother's day, no less.

5/19 - withdrew from GULC and UVA waitlists. Now I am only on 3.

5/30 - withdrew from USC. It's hard saying no to them, because they sure do a great job of making you feel welcome, but UCLA was just a better fit for me.

6/16 still hoping to maybe hear from another watlist *ahem- Boalt- ahem*

6/22 - OMG! Got off the Boalt waitlist today!! I am so happy!! This was my first choice all along - thank you Ed Tom!!!

Hey gotta love big public schools in california. i hope we both get in somewhere good! where are your backups? Just hastings and sc? i'm trying to get together some backup options . so far, davis, hastings, and gw is ucla technically backup, since we have about a 60% chance of acceptance? hmm.. would help me to sleep easier at night, that's for sure.

How did NYU contact you to confirm completion? I submitted over a month ago and then called them 2 weeks ago. They said I was on file, but they could not confirm my status. The conversation basically ended with a snippy "we'll be in touch" statement. By the way...I wish you the best of luck on your aiming high. I'm doing the same myself (only my numbers are not as good as yours). Gotta shoot for the top and hope they see through the numbers.

Hi, and thanks for the kind words. I know that law schools are falling all over themselves to explain that they're kinder, gentler law schools than they used to be, but I didn't expect even the application process to be quite so social. Thanks, internets. Choices? Good question. There are a lot of great schools on my list. I've already been accepted to two more of them than I truly expected to be. (I mean, I thought I had a *chance* at UM and Boalt, which is why I applied, but I certainly didn't *expect* acceptance at either place, especially not by now.) My girlfriend's family is all in Michigan, which weighs in heavily in favor of Michigan. One could do worse. Really, I have a lot more applications that I spent a lot of time and money preparing, so I'm going to give it through the spring and see what happens. And you? Preferences?

- gkentch
  • re: question about deferrals
  • Friday, December 08 2006 at 09:36 AM

deferral is different than WL - it means they couldn't come to a decision EA so they are putting my app in the regular decision pile and reviewing it again in a month when they have more regular applicants to compare me to. So I am not sure if this is better than WL, but I stand a chance of getting admitted, rejected or even WL.

Rugercaptain's page. The first thing I'm doing when I get to wherever is buying my own pug (I've never owned my own...always my parents'). I will probably just study a little more at home so he's not alone. They do need a lot of attention, but really they sleep ALL DAY! Seriously, on the weekend, if you stay home all day, the pug will sleep for at least 6 hours of it. Lazy. Like Lions.

  • Monday, February 12 2007 at 10:06 AM

As a fellow pug-lover and owner I hope you find a way to keep one during school. They do tend to need lots of attention though. My S.O. and I just got another pug puppy so our first has company and play time while we're at work. A quick question: Have you ever seen a pug with long hair? Congrats on USC, and I hope Boalt gives us both some good news soon! Good luck with your cycle.

- jtsd19
  • re: Pugs!
  • Monday, February 12 2007 at 10:29 AM

Breeders are preferable, though you should watch out for puppy mills. Try to always see what conditions the puppies were living in and their parents if possible. We found a breeder through our vet. If you happen to live in Southern California I can fwd the number for a couple of reputable breeders. One of our pugs has long, black hair. Our vet said the long hair happens in about 1 in 10,000. He's actually very cute.

Yeah, they sent me a snail-mail acceptance packet with a print accept/withdraw form in it, so hopefully that one will really work. I went ahead and emailed them as soon as I found out, though, to attempt to withdraw again, and I think that actually worked this time (at least, they sure sounded a little sheepish). I mean, its just sort of funny from my perspective, but they do have 5,000 other applicants who Im sure really, really do want to go there, so I thought I would make another effort to try to get out of their way, and maybe let one of those fine people in in my stead. So if you get accepted soon, its clearly all my doing. :-)

My parents had me when they were graduate students at SC, I also graduated from undergraduate at SC. Alot of people have a different take on it than I do, but I think it would be a better idea to go to a different school than my undergrad. Fight on for sure!....Good luck on your apps.

  • Monday, March 19 2007 at 09:42 AM

I created an account on this "Lwoods" for a day and deleted it, because i was constantly logged into this site. looking at the #s of people that are getting into schools i'm waitlisted/deferred at is stressing me out... yes I did apply this cycle...i haven't heard from any of the cali schools yet, so that makes me really nervous. you're the queen of waitlist and i'm the queen of "preferred deferred status" whatever the heck that means. i wanted to stay in cali (preferably so-cal), but i haven't heard positive anything yet. (rejections from pepperdine, loyola la) i've been stalking my mailman lately.... this whole process is too nerve-wracking. i've had the strangest cycle by far... my gpa is HORRIBLE ( i blame it on engineering). i've gotten rejection letters from 4th tiers, waitlisted at 1st tiers, and deferred everywhere. i'm thinking about maybe going to the northwest if i don't hear back from cali schools. i'm waitlisted at harvard... but get this... they wont let me know till AUGUST! if i don't hear back from them in a week i'm withdrawing. plus i'll be in like 200k debt. i'm deferred at northwestern and georgetown, and waitlisted at washington. i forgot what your account was until i saw that you wrote on my friend's page. this whole waiting process is stressing me out. i feel so uneasy not knowing where i am going to be living in a few months. i have a lot of family friends at of U of Chicago law and USC law and they are in SUPER ghetto areas.... so if you end up there take some pepper spray with you. Also, fyi the competition as hastings is really cut throat. i heard that ppl that come out of there have to compete with stanford and boalt grads for jobs. i don't know how much truth there is to this, but i heard some ppl will tear out important pages from the law books so that other students can't get the info... i haven't heard anything bad about usc.. i'm kind of regretting not applying there. it's a GREAT school with a huge alum connection base. do you know what we should do to get off the waitlists at schools? i've done the initial contact after getting the letters saying that i'm still interested...but that's it. anyway, good luck and keep me posted!

I would say that USC doesn't have that great of a "national" reputation, but I really don't think that it is substantially worse than, say, UCLA's. I'd ask the Career Services people what sort of rank you would need to get jobs elsewhere in the country. I don't envy your position of having to stay on so many waitlists--I just want to send a deposit somewhere soon so I can stop looking at this website and figure out where I'm going to live. honestly, i do not know. this cycle has been very positive for me, and it made deciding where to go pretty difficult. i applied to a ton of schools because i thought that at least one would let me in... i didn't anticipate having an option. very grateful, not complaining at all. i would have been thrilled to go anywhere- i mean that. i have some really great personal experiences with work and service, political work and policy stuff as well. i've been out of school for a while and have moved across the country to do some social justice work. i think that at this point in my life i have a really clear understanding of who i am and what i want to do with the degree, as related to past experiences and future goals. maybe that helped? i can't see it hurting.. are you applying as a graduating senior? that scholarship from usc is a big warm welcome :)
