Advice to future generations:

Humans are imperfect decision makers and LS admissions is by no means an exact or predictable science. There will always be a significant element of randomness. Take advantage of that. Send out apps early, apply to 1 or 2 safeties you'd be comfortable with and then 20+ reach schools. To win the game you only need 1 random event out of 20 tries to go your way. Seriously, if you scour LSN you'll find that everyone who applies to 20+ schools comes out with a "how the hell did I get in there?" acceptance. The extra money is worth it. :-)

Very wierd. I applied ED and they called my mom back home to confirm my email and say they would have a decision by Jan. Did they forget I applied ED or was I "deferred"?

Could mean by end of the year, which would fit with ED notification time frame. I hope they get a [positive!] decision to us before Christmas, I think I'd go bonkers over the holiday knowing I wouldn't get any news for a couple weeks... Good luck! Be sure to update us when a decision comes through!

nope, i didnt hear anything from them. no email and no phone call either. do you know if they tend to defer ppl who apply ED? cus that seems like a weird (and horribly mean) thing to do... i just wanna know now. its gonna drive me crazy if i have to wait until january!

  • Hastings ED Deferred
  • Wednesday, December 12 2007 at 10:52 AM

From what I understand, if you aren't admitted ED you will get deferred. At an open house this fall we were told they didn't want to reject anyone before Christmas. Maybe they are just scanning for 'highly likely admits' and reviewing the rest next year?

  • Thursday, December 13 2007 at 03:41 PM

Aren't you jumping the gun a little on assuming you have been deferred at Hastings? Or did they actually email you and let you know? I have a feeling they are running a little behind this year and will not be getting back to us EC applicants by the 15th. I did not receive any info confirming this but I know they had a lot of applications this year. 220 I think. Don't lose hope yet if they have not explicitly told you that you have not been accepted EC!

I got the Greg Canada "You are complete" mass email twice -once in early Nov. and then again on Dec. 10. I can only assume they passed my file up for early decision and the second letter was welcoming me to the regular decision pile. However, my current location and prohibitive costs (and fear of pissing off adcoms) prevent me from calling to inquire further.

You think? I ask my BF, "what do you think of U Miami," he responds, "its really expensive." I am looking for a low cost, not extremely competitive school. But I guess Miami would be good vs living in NY or DC. Do you think if I call and ask for a fee waiver to apply I will get it?

  • Mandarin
  • Wednesday, January 16 2008 at 07:39 AM

I was only able to pick up some spoken Mandarin during my time in China - reading is a whole different animal! I ran what you sent me through an online translator, if what you were asking was if I had any of those supposed "cardboard" buns, the answer is no - that whole thing came up a few weeks after I had left. Your score on the HSK is impressive - especially after just 1.5 years. Where did you work/study on the Mainland?

  • International Law
  • Wednesday, January 16 2008 at 07:42 PM

Great to see someone else who wants to go into international law. That's so awesome that you're in China right now... the Chinese focus with the Mandarin fluency is going to be so huge for you. I've started Mandarin for fun (focusing more on speaking/pinyin right now, then on reading/writing when I'm more adapted) but it's just for fun, but maybe I can one day turn that into a career opportunity. (I'm big into languages myself) What would you say your top picks are, out of where you've gotten in and where you applied? Good luck with all your schools!

  • Wednesday, January 23 2008 at 02:44 PM

on UW-Madison as well! I, like you, feel very blessed to be admitted with a relatively low LSAT. But hey, I'll take it. Of the schools I've been accepted to, UW-Madison is far and way the leader. However, I am out of state, and so tuition is pricey. I am still applying to UIUC and Notre Dame. I am also doing a Feb. LSAT re-take... so barring some miracle, I'll probably see you in Madison next fall. It's an awesome city/school.

- lsatirist
  • Madison
  • Wednesday, January 23 2008 at 04:10 PM

Yeah, the more I hear back, the more likely it seems I'll be in Madison next year. The OOS tuition of 32K sucks, but the in-state tuition at my home school (Pitt) is 23K, so it's not a huge difference. Also, I hear if you can land a TA job at Madison, they waive tuition entirely. That would be great. As for the LSAT, I'm screwed on that. I live in China and it's only offered once a year in my area and the Feb test isn't offered outside the US...

  • Iowa waitlist?
  • Tuesday, February 05 2008 at 09:09 AM

Are you sure that's a waitlist you got from iowa? If it said you are being placed in the hold category then that is not a waitlist its something different. Also, I think you may have misread the letter, mine says 50% of applicants are placed in that category. As I understand it, hardly anybody gets in off the waitlist.

- benrroth
  • hold at Iowa
  • Thursday, February 07 2008 at 06:51 AM

Ok, I think me and you are in the same place. I don't know a ton about it, but what I do know is that a deferral is better than a waitlist at Iowa. All I really know is that I know a guy that got held last year that got in. Basically....we just gotta wait it out until April 1st (when they will have reviewed your file again).

- benrroth
