Additional info & updates

*****Scholarships are per year*****

I am going to leave all of my info up here for people who are applying this year. I had some negative factors against me, so if applying with similar numbers, don't be discouraged. Good luck to everyone applying this year.

7/07/2009:

It is 100% official today. I signed a year lease on a house in Coconut Grove. I am going to be at FIU no matter what happens on any of my waitlists. I spent good money on my apps however, so I am going to wait it out and see what happens. This late in the game I am not taking anyone's spot.

6/30/2009:

Was contacted by Maine Law today. The waitlist has opened up and I will hear back shortly.

6/22/2009:

Kicked off the Villanova waitlist...

6/16/2009:

Thanks for the messages. It sounds like this open house was the same as the last. I guess I didn't miss too much.

6/14/2009:

I missed the second FIU open house this weekend because I was out of town. Can someone please tell me what I missed? Thank you...

6/04/2009:

Received and early birthday present from Elon today. I was pulled off the waitlist and offered $5,000 in scholarship money. I didn%u2019t know they offered scholarships to people on waitlists%u2026 Elon was one of my front runners early on. I don%u2019t know if I can beat the price of FIU though%u2026. Decisions decisions%u2026.

5/19/2009:

Getting excited about school next year. More and more people keep joining FIU's attending student list!

5/08/2009:

I have accepted all of my grants and loans at FIU. It is official!!!! Lets go Panthers!!!!!

4/28/2009:

Just found out today that I was waitlisted at a school who's numbers look like this

GPA: 25-75% 3.0-3.54

LSAT: 149-156

Are you serious? I am not a bitter person, but come on. This is the second non-ranked school that has wiatlisted me who's median LSAT score is 3 points lower than mine... I give up hahaha

4/27/2009:

Woohoo!!! Just found out today that FIU is giving me a $5,000 grant!!!! That means FIU will litterally cost me only $5,000 a year! Mierda santa!

4/20/2009:

Rejected at New Mexico

4/16/2009:

Spoke to admissions lady at New Mexico about my file and I was told that a decision has been made on my file and I should get my letter in the mail next week. Probably not a good thing that they didn't feel the need to tell me what they decided.

4/14/2009:

Good News On FIU:

FIU had the highest bar passage rate for Florida law schools in Feb! Here is the link:
http://www.floridabarexam.org/public/main.nsf/ExamStats.PDF/$file/ExamStats.PDF

This has very little to do with law school... unless you are a sports fan like myself... but I am personally excited that FIU hired Isiah Thomas as their head basketball coach!!! Here are the links if anyone is interested...

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4065658

and...

http://www.fiusports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=49079&SPID=4764&DB_OEM_ID=11700&ATCLID=3719465

4/09/2009:

I was WL at Maine today... actually just before 10:30 pm

4/08/2009:

I am not sure what happened, but Nova seems to have just offered me nearly $30,000 a year in grants, word-study, and scholarship... They break it up into semesters, but it comes out just under $30k...?

4/01/2009:

I feel like I have this huge burden off my back. I am still semi-anxious about my waitlists, but knowing I am in somewhere, and that I have a spot paid for... I am sooooo relaxed!

3/30/2009:

I put my deposit down at FIU. I am going to stay on my waitlists because I there are several schools that I "might" rather attend. But I will not know until I visit them. I did not send in the forms to stay on at Arkansas so I will not take anyone%u2019s spot there. I will notify Tulsa and Dayton this week, even though it won%u2019t really help anyone at this point. As of today, I am a Golden Panther.

Waitlisted at Elon on Saturday. I did not see it comming. I had a good talk with a dean 2/3 weeks before and my numbers were better than several students receiving scholarships. I am actually really bummed about this one...

Rejected at UNLV...

3/21/2009:

As of right now, I still have 5 schools that I have not heard from. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if I did not have to put money down next week.

3/17/2009:

I was waitlisted at VIllanova. I am not sad to be waitlisted because it is my top choice and I am happy that I was not turned down. This gives me some hope that I might be accepted. I would love to go here!

3/16/2009:

Waitlisted at Ark- Fayetteville... They said my numbers were not that strong... but with their 25%'s being 3.0 and 151... how are my numbers not there?

3/14/2009:

Went to the FIU open house today. Really enjoyed the campus and faculty. I like the school a lot and it gives me a chance to stay at/near home.

3/11/2009:

In at Charlotte with $7,000 per year.

3/10/2009:

Great phone call with Elon today (I think). I have a slight history (nothing big, no stabbings or drug sale haha). It is probably why I have been turned down at some schools that I might have been accepted to. I spoke with a dean and she asked me some questions about it and I really hope it went as well as I feel it did. Elon is a favorite of mine. Expensive, but a favorite; and with the slightest scholarship money I could definitely be in Greensboro in the fall. Cross your fingers for me!!!

3/09/2009:

Email from Nova Southeastern saying to check my decision manager.... I got in. No news on scholarship, I will prob need a considerable amount of money to attend there over FIU. I am just happy to finally get some good news... x2

Nice phone call with Dayton. They told me I would receive a $15,000 a year scholarship. I was close to backing out but with that amount of scholarship, they make a big jump up my short list.

3/08/2009:

How does a school offer you $10,000 and then put you on a waitlist? That is just crappy! Oh... and I am talking about Ark LR

3/05/2009:

The hits dont stop... rejected at Syracuse and LSU... I really thought I would get into Syracuse... This one really hurts

3/02/2009:

Waitlisted at Louisville

2/27/2009:

I have a feeling that I am going to get 20 letters in the mail the last week of March and I prob won't hear anything before then haha.

2/25/2009:

No new news, but I did go to FIU today and spoke with an admissions officer. I also took a tour of the campus. So far it is a favorite... but I only have four acceptances. 10k a year for tuition is not half bad.

2/22/2009:

I have decided not to attend Barry today. FIU at most will cost me 10k, which is less than Barry with the big scholarship.

2/20/2009:

Woke up to a phone call early this monring (I am in Arizona right now) from my dad telling me that I was accecpted to FIU! Instate tuition changes my decsions on everything. I was not sure if I would get in because of the high number of applicants to instate schools this year, and budget cuts that are happening to Florida state schools.

2/19/2009:

I went to visit Tulsa on Monday. I personally thought the school was great. The campus was beautiful and the people there were extremely friendly. I sat in on a class and took a tour of the campus. The law building was old but it had more of a classic feel than a worn down feeling. I also thought the library was one of the nicest I have seen. I would have to say right now it is my top choice, but finances will be an important factor.

I was also rejected at Kansas today.

2/13/2009:

I received a rejection letter from PSU today. It really sucks because it was my second or third choice for law school.

I decided to apply to Charlotte today.

Ok... I also applied to Maine and Charleston tonight. The waitlist from MSU rattled me because I thought I had a good shot and most of the schools I have remaining are slight reach schools.

2/12/2009:

Waitlisted at MSU

I also applied to New Mexico, Arkansas, and UNLV...

2/11/2009:

A lot of news today. Dayton called to congratulate me on my acceptance today. I was also told that I would be receiving a scholarship offer in the mail next week.

Called Indiana... Waitlisted

Finally! Opened my mailbox and found a large (slim) envelope from Barry. My acceptance letter was inside along with a $13,000 scholarship (per year) offer. With the scholarship offer, this is the cheapest school thus far. I also grew up in Orlando. I guess I am 2 for 2!

2/06/2009:

Received a very large envelope in the mail today from FIU. But it was a viewbook and a thank you letter? Do they not realize what time of the year it is?

2/03/2009:

No news. I scheduled a visit to Tulsa and I have been emailed by every school that I have applied to regarding financial aid.

1/30/2009:

My Graduate Diploma came in the mail TODAY!

1/28/2009:

Spoke to Dean at UALR today. Very nice man. He told me the offer was real and gave me some information on the school and surrounding area. We talked on the phone fore about 30 min so it is nice to feel wanted.

Shortly after midnight I made the decision to apply to UALR. Even if the scholarship offer is a fake, it is worth spending the time (and $12 app fee) because it seems to get very positive feedback.

1/27/2009:

Received and interesting email today from Arkansas LR. I was told if I applied before February 15, and was accepted, they would give me a $10,000 scholarship or more. The thing I am curious about is, why would they offer me $10,000 if they did not know that they were going to admit me? I am going to call tomorrow. I am slightly afraid it is a stunt to attract students to apply so they can turn them down and improve their US News Rankings. If you know anything or have an opinion, please let me know.

1/26/2009:

The first schools I applied to were Tulsa, Barry and Dayton. I heard back from Tulsa about 2 weeks later with an email inviting me to join an online group. At the end of the email they congratulated me on my acceptance? Two days later my acceptance letter came in the mail.

I will try to keep up and let people know when I get in, because I know it helps to let others know where they stand and what scores will get them in.

Good luck everyone. I know it is a long and tiresome process, (at least for me) and I hope you all get into the schools of your choice.

Thanks

Arkansas LR
Tuesday, October 07 2008 at 08:00 PM

This kind of happened to me except with Florida Coastal. They sent me a couple of emails saying that if I applied I would be accepted with a 10,000/year scholarship. This is what I think is happening for you with Arkansas LR. Of course, I don't think it is binding on their part so who knows

Wednesday, December 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

Hey, I sent an addendum to them about getting a graduate TA position at UPenn. Then I toured the school and met with the director of recruitment. good luck with your apps!

Thanks
Wednesday, December 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

What you wrote makes since. I am just not one who likes to wait for much anything. The wait-game, it kills me.

Index
Tuesday, October 07 2008 at 08:00 PM

I have no idea what the index stuff is. I think that there is a way you can take your index and compare it to schools, but I have never been able to understand it, good luck with the rest of your apps

Index
Monday, January 26 2009 at 07:00 PM

several law schools compute an index based on your gpa and lsat: index = gpa * x + lsat * y + c the exact values and meaning varies from school to school, but it helps them rank applicants for their own purposes, hope that helps

I went to Campbell University in North Carolina. I was in the Army when I did my undergraduate work and I was a Defense Intelligence Analyst for the DOD. I mostly focused on that in my personal statement and resume. I wish you the best, and if I can help you at all, please let me know.

Index
Monday, January 26 2009 at 07:00 PM

the index here is the same as the particular law schools use (formulas are available on lsac website somewhere). you can't really use it to compare across law schools, more to compare within a single school. a 2.9 at two different schools indicates that they use similar formulas (or the same formula) to calculate your index, but how it ranks you among the rest of their applicant pool varies by who applied to what school. the same number doesn't mean the same thing to different schools.

ouch...
Wednesday, December 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

I am sorry to hear that. Actually, I had a similar experience with Richmond. I had received three letters from the all in one day. Each of which looked as if it might contain that glorious acceptance letter. Instead, each of them was a thank you letter from different student organizations.

Greetings
Wednesday, October 29 2008 at 08:00 PM

Good Luck! I'm applying at IUPUI as well and hope to see you get a lot of acceptances.

Thursday, January 29 2009 at 07:00 PM

We have a similar profile (with grad school). Accepted at UALR... Aaron sure is a nice guy... asked him for a full-ride and got it. You could try asking the admin ppl with the other accepts and see if they give in.

Saturday, September 06 2008 at 08:00 PM

My status checker at IU-Indy went to "Decision Letter Sent" today as well.. Did your term happen to change from "Fall" to "Summer Opt" as well? I am thinking they may be asking me to matriculate in the summer.

Re: Question
Wednesday, December 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

Humm, actually, I am not sure what school you are talking about. Personally, I never had an FIU status checker. As for Nova, they did not have a decision on the checker, they said decision made. Their decisions are viewable online at their Decision Manager on their website. Campbells checker had a decision, admit. I have not received any other status checkers. I hope this helps, unfortunately, the most likely answer is, as you have probably already figured, waitlist. Wish I could have helped more.

Thanks for the reply, hopefully it is good news but we will see. Good luck with your cycle!

By the way!
Wednesday, December 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

Also, congratulations on all the acceptances. So far so good!

Monday, December 29 2008 at 07:00 PM

I tried calling in to Indiana to find out my status and they said they wouldn't tell me over the phone. You must have got lucky and spoke to a noob.

Tulsa
Wednesday, January 07 2009 at 07:00 PM

Well I am from Oklahoma so I sort of just know what I know about TU based on that. Back in the day, like the 80's, TU was a pretty respected law school. And even though the are a tier 4 school now, they still seem to have that reputation. I guess thats something you won't find on their website.

Congrats on FIU!!!
Tuesday, February 17 2009 at 07:00 PM

Your posts are extremely helpful as we have applied to a lot of the same schools. I too was weary of the Univ. of Arkansas offer, but applied on faith. While UM is my favorite, I don't think that I would be its favorite. Only time will tell. I hope to hear something from FIU soon!

FIU
Wednesday, December 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

Congratulations! Yes, I have heard back from some schools. I was rejected at DePaul, Waitlisted at Stetson, and put on hold at Rutgers. Not exactly a good couple of weeks, but, I still think I have a shot at some of the other schools.

Elon
Friday, June 20 2008 at 08:00 PM

Yeah, thats the right date. I applied there off a fee waiver I got over the summer. Answer came through the mail; then a coffee mug came and finally my financial aid information came.

Misc...
Wednesday, December 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

My top choice from the beginning was Washington and Lee. I wish I had applied to UVA, however. Realistically though, it most likely would have been a waste of money. My top 5 were in this order: Washington and Lee, Boston College, Penn State, Richmond, and The UF. Obviously, that has somewhat changed, considering BC rejected me as of today. So I guess I will replace them with Rutgers. LSU is also a good fit for me because (1) I was born in Louisanna and (2) My mother still lives there. Yes, I plan on attending the FIU event on the 14. Perhaps I will see you there.

Sunday, January 25 2009 at 07:00 PM

Wow your #'s give me hope ;-)Our #'s are very similar. Congrats on FIU, I am a Miami native and the tuition rate @ FIU is really making me give them a serious look. I have added you to my watchlist...good luck on your cycle.

Wednesday, May 28 2008 at 08:00 PM

They sent the acceptance letter in a large envelope. Scholarship letter came a week later. In between those, they sent me a travel mug.

LSU
Wednesday, December 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

How did LSU notify you? I am sure things will pick up in your favor soon!

Congrats
Tuesday, February 17 2009 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on your acceptances. I haven't heard a thing from Univ. of Arkansas...I feel a little "left in the wind" by them as well. They offered me the same $10,000 deal also, I wonder if they will waitlist me. I saw where your Nova status checker said "decision made". On the page where you would normally check your application status, there's a link titled "Decision Manager" click on that, enter in your NSU ID No. (they should have emailed it to you a few weeks back - it starts with an N) and your decision letter should pop up. Good luck to you!!!

FIU event
Wednesday, December 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

Yes, I will be attending the FIU event on the 14th. Will you? I have been on a waitlist streak as of late. The latest was Penn State.Arghh.

FIU open house
Tuesday, December 30 2008 at 07:00 PM

How did that go today? Did alot of poeple show up? Was there alot of part time people there? I called and they said it was only open to people who were accpeted but they will have another one in a month for the next "round". which i am hoping i am. are you going part time? Thanks!! As you can tell the waiting is killing me!!

Open House
Wednesday, December 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

Hey, I had forgotten my phone in the car. I tried talking to a few guys to see if you were them. The event was a little to structured at the beginning and i got caught up in conversation with one of the professors at the very end. I will try to call you tomorrow in the evening. I am interested in hearing someone else's perspective. I am sorry for the miscue.

open house
Tuesday, December 30 2008 at 07:00 PM

Thank you very much you said a mouthful and i re3ally appreciate the insight. I look forward to being class mates. even part time, our paths will cross as i plan to accelerate in the summer classes and a day class here and there. i have the flex to do sowhere i am owrking. And yes, those in your batch who are picked have to put a seat deposit down or they are pulled, that is a fair system and that makes sense why i will wait up to 4 weeks for a decision and also makes sense for what they call the rolling admissions. Thank you VERY much :-)

FIU
Thursday, November 06 2008 at 07:00 PM

Hey! My name is gee and I went to the FIU Reception yesterday as well! How did you like it?

How was FIU?
Tuesday, February 17 2009 at 07:00 PM

How was the open house at FIU? I still haven't heard a word from them. I'm really interested in finding out how they treat part time students. Coastal was a pleasant surprise. It wasn't on my radar, but at this point it may be the logical decision for me as nobody else is throwing money my way. I'm supposed to get my scholarship package this week. I requested an increase and after my conversation with the admissions folks I feel confident that I may have received one.

Thanks!
Tuesday, February 17 2009 at 07:00 PM

Thanks for the insight on FIU. Keep your head up with regard to the Waitlists...I'm pretty sure you'll be hearing from a few of those schools again before it's all over with. I know you still have a few outstanding, are you leaning more towards any particular school?

Sunday, February 01 2009 at 07:00 PM

How did Arkansas-Fayetteville inform you of their decision.......email, letter?

Keep Hope Alive!
Tuesday, February 17 2009 at 07:00 PM

Villanova will change their mind. You have good numbers and a strong graduate history. I would write them a letter emphasizing your strong points and your committment to their program. Send it directly to the admissions dean via fax or email. Dig deep! It'll pay off!

Letter
Tuesday, February 17 2009 at 07:00 PM

I would write the letter and send it in and then follow up with a call to confirm receipt. When you call, it's not like you're going to be able to speak directly to the dean anyway. The person that you'll likely get will be someone who's tired of us crazed "wannabes" tying up her phone line. Good luck to you!

Thanks!
Friday, June 13 2008 at 08:00 PM

Thanks for the well wishes! I'm trying to stay optimistic, but the way my cycle has gone, it has definitely been tough. Good luck with the Villanova waitlist! Hope you get in off of it!

Congrats on Dayton and Tulsa, Good luck
Tuesday, December 16 2008 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on Dayton$$ and Tulsa. No decisions yet. My parents like Temple's rep (I'm from the East Coast). Wisconsin is an amazing academic institution(I thrice visited). I'm thankful for both great choices. I will most likely select based on cost.

Villanova
Sunday, January 04 2009 at 07:00 PM

Hey, I actually did not do anything special to get into Villanova. Just sent in my app and 3 letters of rec. I guess the things that stood out to them on my resume were varsity swimming at BC and working one summer at the DA's office. Also being Hispanic Im sure helped my cause. If I were you Id send out a LOCI (letter of continued interest) as soon as you can outlining why nova is your top choice. Another thing you could do is call admissions and try to set up a meeting/visit to demonstate your level of commitment to them. Well I hope this helped you out a little bit. If you have any questions I guess just shoot me another line. peace

Hey
Wednesday, December 03 2008 at 07:00 PM

I was actually a little suprised to be outright rejected from LSU. O well. Thank you though.

Thank you HM
Sunday, January 25 2009 at 07:00 PM

Thank you for all of your advice. I will definitely do all of those things. I also appreciate your kind words at the end. So thank you once again.

Sunday, January 04 2009 at 07:00 PM

Im almost positive that Im going to Villanova next year. Hoping to get off the Wake waitlist but even if I do the money at Villanova is too good to pass up. Im also waiting on U Houston but unless they give some kind of scholarship Ill be ruling them out too. So with any luck Ill be seeing you at Nova next year!

Thursday, November 06 2008 at 07:00 PM

haha no problem. Well, I truely enjoyed the entire presentation of the school. I will be sending my deposit in for FIU. However, as you can see I have a slew of schools I am still waiting to hear back from. lol so who knows where I am going to end up attending. Regarding UM, I didnt even apply because I knew if I were accepted to both I would choose FIU. I guess I would keep my name on the waitlist. It couldn't hurt. Hope it helps :) & thanks for the FIU Feedback. Good luck with the rest of the schools!

Nova is a great school if you want to work in Ft.Lauderdale or south florida. FIU is new and upcoming, but they are lacking alumni base, however, their tuition is favorable if you are willing to take the risk. New Mexico and Nevada are both great schools and they don't compete with much in their regions, you would def enjoy the cities and the good job prospects if you get in. And congrats on being placed on the waitlist for Villanova!! Nice cycle, and goodluck with the rest of your apps and the waitlist!

Rejected at UF. No suprise there, however, it still sucks. Still FIU is in the lead. I have all but decided to not pay my deposit at Campbell. FIU has way more clinics and the summer in Spain sounds wonderful.

The reason you can't sign in: you signed in on another computer and forgot to sign out! I did the same thing, it took me a week to figure it out. Just figure out which computer you were on, sign on, and then log off. Problem solved. Hope that helps.

thanks

I see you too have made a final decision! I know you will do well there. It became less stressful once I set my sights on Florida Coastal. I'm no longer pacing the floor at night. If something else comes along, then so be it. The school itself was awesome. However, it sure didn't help once I discovered it only took me 15 minutes to make it to the beach. Good luck!

FIU, so it seems

Sorry about Elon. However, as of now, we are soon to be 1Ls at FIU together. I called to decline all of my remaining schools "save the wait lists" to tell them that I will not be attending. When I called Nova they asked me to reconsider and wait for my scholarship offer to arrive. They extended my date until the 17th.

Thanks for the info. I hope u are right in that FIU won't turn me down. I applied PT because I have to continue to work full-time while in law school. I hope I hear back soon from them, but I am scared that I will get waitlisted because it is so late in the cycle.....

FIU making wait in agony

I am also taking into consideration this is a holy week for many people and maybe offices are not as full this week at the admissions. Thanks. Keep me informed of any more insight you may come across in the blogs. So i am just waiting. :-)

Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, the word stressful does not begin to describe what this process has been like for me. I am really hoping to get off of a waitlist, preferably Loyola's, but I would be content with any of the three at this point. I actually didn't apply to FIU because I have no interest in practicing law in FL. The only reason I applied to UF is because it is my undergrad and my mom begged me to, since tuition is so cheap for in-staters. I was born outside of FL and have been trying to get out of FL since... oh, about middle school. lol So now I have no choice. I am actually going to start sending out job apps and grad apps next week though, since getting off of a waitlist is anything but a sure thing. I figure if I don't get off of a waitlist, I have time on my side, since I am graduating in 3 yrs instead of 4. Plus, it would be a novel concept if I could get a job, go to work every day, and then come home and be able to do whatever I want and not have to study for an additional few hours. I'm trying my hardest to look on the bright side in case things don't work out. But I'm glad to know someone is rooting for me! What about you? If you get off of any of your waitlists, would you go to say, Miami, over FIU? But that must be a hugh sigh of relief to have put a deposit down somewhere! Thanks again for the kind comment!

FIU Questions
Friday, August 15 2008 at 08:00 PM

Hey my name is Ryan and I was just accepted into FIU. I am really trying to decide between them and Michigan State which are two very different options. I am from California and know next to nothing about Florida and I wanted to know what Miami was like and how the community at FIU was. Have you had chance to visit the school and what is your general feel of it. Is it in a good part of Miami or on the outskirts and also do you know any alumni from the school? Do the majority of graduates stay in the Miami area. Sorry I just have a million questions, if you can just e-mail me back with why you chose FIU I would really appreciate it. Ryan Thanks, Ryan

Sorry I have been away from this site for a while. I actually just found out yesterday! Literally 7 months after I applied. I did not get in, but at this point I was focused on being a golden panther anyway, so now if it wasn't before it is 100 percent official.

Thanks for the warm welcome...we are trying to get a bar night together before orientation in Miami for those who are able to attend...With FIU being so new, we're going to have to REALLY depend on each other for networking even more than other schools...so we should all get together and start forming these lifelong bonds...if youre interested email me and I'll get with you with the details...anybody else who is attending FIU in the fall is more than welcome to contact me at flhealth@yahoo.com

Thanks! Congratulations on your acceptance and decision as well. I am a bit hesistant to turn FSU down at this point, but I feel like FIU is a real up and comer with a lot of potential. I have been communicating with a graduate of my undergraduate school who is a 3L @ FIU and he seems to really enjoy it. I think Miami is a much better lifestyle fit for me than Tallahassee. I definitely am looking forward to the upcoming year and think all the FIU students will create great bonds with it being such a small school.
