Additional info & updates

Unless otherwise indicated, scholarship money is listed as the three-year total.

12/26/06 - Just got back from the inlaws to find acceptance from Pitt with 12K renewable scholarship dated the 18th. The Dean of Admissions included a handwritten note saying they'd be happy to accept me without knowing my December LSAT. In other words, I was accepted with my 158. They scored major points with that little bit!

01/12/07 - In at BYU! Notified by email. First acceptance of the year and I'm pretty happy. Scholarship information on the way via snail mail.

01/13/07 - In at Willamette with lots of money (24K/year). Mail dated the 11th. I probably won't go, but it's nice to have :)

01/16/07 - In at Emory. Thin packet with letter dated January 4.

01/17/07 - Email from W & L. I'm in! No mention of money.

01/18/07 - In at Denver via email! No mention of money. I'm kind of surprised I haven't had any bad news yet.

01/19/07 - Phone call from Ann Richard at GW ... I'm in! 7 for 7 and I can't believe it. A little money to sweeten the deal will put GW in serious contention.
(later) Two in one day. Small, thin envelope from Temple saying I'm in and that more is on its way. :) 8 for 8.

01/20/07 - 9 for 9. Acceptance to NM via snail mail. Letter with no mention of money.

01/22/07 - Full tuition at BYU. WOW. Letter today from the Assistant Dean with scholarship information and specific references to my time abroad and my personal statement. The scholarship is renewable "each year based on continued academic performance according to law school policy." I'm not sure what that means so I intend to call in a few days to clarify. In the meantime, I'll just list the three-year total of current tuition rates. I'm very, very happy about this.

01/23/07 - BYU's offer is renewable based on placement in the top third of the class after the first year.

01/24/07 - Email from GW. Offer for the presidential merit scholarship (full tuition for three years with the first year of housing). Unbelievable!

01/25/07 - Priority package from IU-B with acceptance and renewable full tuition scholarship offer. How cool!

01/28/07 - 13,500/year from W&L provided I maintain a 3.0. Good to have!

01/30/07 - Accepted at Utah via phone. One of my top choices :)

02/01/07 - Surprise email from Cornell. I'm in!

02/09/07 - In at Colorado. I like Boulder. Also, snail mail from USC congratulating me on my acceptance!

02/20/07 - In at ASU via snail mail. Letter dated the 15th with very kind reference to my personal statement. That's 15 for 15.

03/04/07 - UVA. Priority, non-resident waitlist. Pretty happy as I was expecting a ding. Staying on the waitlist for as long as I can :)

03/08/07 - USC's scholarship offer came today. 10K/year as long as I stay enrolled. Very nice, though probably not enough to sway me from GW at this point.

03/20/07 - Placed in the "reserved" group at Columbia. I'm actually pretty surprised. I was expecting a ding. I'll stay on the list to keep my options open.

03/21/07 - I feel an ulcer coming on. Utah, my alma mater, just offered me a full tuition scholarship. I didn't see this coming. It throws a huge wrench in the spokes of my decision making process. I'm still leaning towards GW, though.

03/23/07 - 5K for one year from ASU even though I already withdrew .... I should check on that.

03/28/07 - Wha? Consfusing email from ND asking me to fill out the provisional list confirmation form. I guess I've been waitlisted. Maybe the official notice is on its way via snail mail.

04/09/07- Duke to me: DING!

04/12/07 - Last week I asked USC for more money since I'm very interested in attending. They upped my scholarship to 15K/year which is really great. It might not be enough, though, to overlook GW's awesome offer.

4/15/07 - Seat deposits have been sent to GW and Cornell. Still haven't received Cornell's financial aid info. I think USC is out, but I'll wait another week or two to withdraw. Staying on Columbia's and UVA's waitlists just to see what happens.

5/3/07 - I withdrew from USC today. That leaves GW, Cornell, UVa and Columbia as the only schools still in play. I'm tired of not knowing where I'm going to school. I just want to make a decision already.

5/13/07 - Letter dated the 8th from Cornell. They've generously awarded me $9200 per year. Hmm. I'm gonna have to think about this.

6/9/07 - Letter dated the 6th from Columbia. They were unable to "take favorable action" on my application. A little disappointed but incredibly relieved to have solid plans for this fall.

6/17/07 - Sent in the second GW deposit earlier this week! I'm taking the money and going to Washington. Very happy :)

08/08/07 - Dinged from UVA. Indifferent. Already living in DC for GW.

On the LSAT. Hope it goes well.

Thanks for the response
Wednesday, August 16 2006 at 08:00 PM

I sure hope so it goes well. Thanks for the support. By the way, where did you study/travel in Europe?

Euro-Trip
Wednesday, August 16 2006 at 08:00 PM

Well, cold in Europe doesn't really narrow it down, but I also enjoy traveling. Europe is one of my favorite destinations.

Thanks

Thanks for the well-wishes! I felt pretty knocked around by the LSAT, moreso than I expected. I'll be retaking too, I think, if 160 or under. Can't even fathom that at this point, especially after I saw that no testing sites have availability in DC.

Good Luck

Good Luck on the LSAT. I also took in on the 30th and am hoping for the best. Good luck through all the application process! I hope you can get into the schools you want. I agree that Utah will be cheap...but my wife and I are hoping to get out of state for awhile....anyway, Good Luck!

An Idea
Thursday, October 05 2006 at 08:00 PM

I was in a similar situation as you, i scored 6-7 points lower on the LSAT then on practice, i decided to apply and included an addendum letting the schools know i would be taking the test again. i figured at least i'll be on their radar screens and hopefully my higher lsat next time around will seal the deal. i think you could try this also, send in the apps and then just update with the new lsat. in any case good luck this cycle

Good Luck...

I want to second the comment about its awesomeness! I grew up there and I loved it. It is a great place to raise kids but also a lot of fun as far as the college scene goes. Also UNM's campus is in a really fun part of town. Good luck with your apps!

Good luck
Tuesday, December 26 2006 at 07:00 PM

So you have multiple LSATs? The thing that stopped me from applying to Duke is that they average LSAT scores, making me have much lower chances at that school. Regardless, good luck!

way to kick ass
Sunday, December 11 2005 at 07:00 PM

on the second LSAT. Awesome.

oops
Sunday, December 11 2005 at 07:00 PM

that probably wasn't LDS-appropriate language. Well, way to go and God Bless.

Yay Cougars!
Saturday, July 01 2006 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on the BYU acceptance, man!!!!

score increase
Tuesday, May 09 2006 at 08:00 PM

Prior to my 158, I was actually practicing with scores in the mid 160's. I just psyched myself out with nerves to get the 158, thinking only about the negatives and how many questions I might have missed while I should have been focusing on the problem at hand. The increase was just a result of calming myself down before the test.

congrats!
Tuesday, December 20 2005 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on the acceptances man!

Rock on
Wednesday, October 11 2006 at 08:00 PM

Hey man, you are totally rocking this cylce! Congratulations. It gives me a wee bit of hope, because we have very similar soft factors.

Congrats and good luck
Monday, February 12 2007 at 07:00 PM

Congrats fellow Philosopher! FULL RIDE to GW... that is a sweet deal. Plenty of hiring from there. Good luck on Columbia and Virginia. I'd rather go to GW for free than to Cornell, personally. But I don't like the cold or ithaca too much, so I'm biased.

hey
Friday, June 02 2006 at 08:00 PM

Congrats on your acceptances! What's your top choice?

S2X
depends
Friday, June 02 2006 at 08:00 PM

If I get into U of Hawaii (my last pending app), I may go there. If I don't get in, I'll probably end up at SLU. Also, Seattle U, while unlikely to get in off the WL, remains an appealing choice due to the array of courses and that it's in a city where I can see myself practicing law. Whatever the case, my decision will be heavily influenced on my spring break trip to visit law schools. It's too early for me to tell yet.

curious about your U scholarship
Friday, February 23 2007 at 07:00 PM

you write that your scholarship is $45k. is that the actually dollar amound quoted in your letter?

utah or byu?
Friday, February 23 2007 at 07:00 PM

not sure. i like salt lake and the u environment better, but i've yet to even hear from them. byu is ranked better (though they dropped this year, it looks like) and it has a strong international law focus, but i'll almost defintely practice in wasatch area after law school and would be just as happy in the environmental program at the u. in the end, it might be an issue of money. i was told that the u gives scholarship preference to applicants who completed before jan 15, so if they don't come through with money, i'm defintely heading south.

U of U
Thursday, March 02 2006 at 07:00 PM

would you mind withdrawing from the U of U if you think you won't be attending there? Thanks in advance

GW, BYU, U of U
Tuesday, April 03 2007 at 08:00 PM

WOW GW is throwing out some big bucks! BYU and UTAH are the superior schools, and you're in-state...If I was as lucky as you, I'd pick on of the aforementioned schools for sure. SLC is a great palce...

U of U?
Thursday, March 22 2007 at 08:00 PM

hrafnkell: Given your slew of outstanding offers, is there still any chance of you ending up at U of U?

GW, USC
Thursday, March 22 2007 at 08:00 PM

DC or LA--big city living for you in either case....lots of opportunities! Good Luck. I'm still awaiting some decisions and really enjoyed my visit to Pacific McGeorge. McGeorge becomes a serious contender if I can squeeze some more $$$ out of them. Other than that, Utah is looking real nice.

You should go to...
Saturday, February 17 2007 at 07:00 PM

Cornell! Yay! :)

USC $$$
Tuesday, February 06 2007 at 07:00 PM

To whom did you direct your request for more money from USC? I'm also strongly considering them, especially if they drop me some extra cash.

I knew...
Tuesday, February 06 2007 at 07:00 PM

That answer sounded familiar...I should've cross-referenced LSD with LSN; haha, oh well...thanks again.

Re: GW
Saturday, September 16 2006 at 08:00 PM

Yeah... I emailed Dean Richard and she asked where I decided on and my major reasons. Wrote her a nice, long email. Hope it helps her.
