Extra Curricular Information

My aim is not quite as high as it was a couple months ago, heh.

Five total engineering internships (starting in high school), one year working in a small company before graduating.

Volunteer at local hospital, basic club involvement.

Ended up ditching my law school plans - withdrawing from everywhere, pursuing a career instead.

Additional info & updates

I'm waitlisted at my number one choice of Chicago, but still hopeful that they'll let me in. For reasons why I'm such a fan, check out my review from a recent visit:

http://www.lawschooldiscussion.org/prelaw/index.php/topic,54330.0.html

12-01-05 - Email notification of acceptance, full-tuition Dean's Scholarship to Baylor. Letter followed.

12-19-05 - Acceptance call from UVA. No mention of scholarship in phonecall or letter (hope to hear something in March).

12-28-05 - Received acceptance letter from NYU, it was dated the 19th I believe (pretty quick turnaround).

01-05-06 - Acceptance from Willamette, $25k/year (barely above current tuition)

01-22-06 - Decided to throw out a late app to Yale, couldn't resist.

01-26-06 - Got a call from Lewis and Clark, they said they sent out an admission letter last friday (the 20th), and that I got a full tuition scholarship. The lady said she likes to call people who get scholarships, it was a really nice touch (I don't know why the letter has taken so long).

01-26-06 - Got the rejection from Stanford (dated the 24th), not surprising, but still disappointing to be in their auto-reject category. Ink was still wet when they folded the letter! :-|

01-28-06 - Finally got my L&C packet in the mail (over a week since they mailed it), never knew it took so long to go around 40 miles, heh. They have a slick personalized website thingy that was fun to try - they will be a very tempting option no matter what.

02-03-06 - Held at Penn. Not even sure why I applied there, so I'll probably withdraw. I did not write the "Why Penn" essay.

02-24-06 - Harvard rejection letter received, and surprisingly it doesn't sting one bit. The upside is I'll probably get a bunch of views for being one of the first people from my admit date rejected - thank goodness for LSN addiction!! :P

02-25-06 - Acceptance letter from U. of Oregon dated 02/23, $6000/year scholarship on a $17,942 tuition bill. Pretty pathetic offer, I probably wouldn't have attended even with a full-tuition, this makes it easy.

02-27-06 - Waitlist letter from U. of Chicago, dated the 23rd. I'm guessing my LORs were weak, I didn't think about law school until recently and never focused on making all those faculty contacts, bah!!

02-28-06 - Called Berkeley office, told that the decisions have recently come back and mine was denied. Not too surprised, just glad to finally know.

I'm not surprised about Berkeley because I hadn't heard anything, they seem to be kind of random with their admissions, and my GPA isn't quite as stratospheric as they probably like. My wife said she didn't want to go to Berkeley either - so now I've avoided that conflict as well :D.

I got an email from admissions@law.berkeley.edu saying that my application was under review - I also thought it was taking a long time, I'm guessing you'll get the email in the next week.

UVA
Monday, November 28 2005 at 07:00 PM

I work in Charlottesville (where UVA is), so if you end up not wanting the big-city-life of NYC (NYU), C-ville is a cool place to live--good restaurants, lots of hiking trails, great climate, decent bars, lots of twenty/thirty-somethings . . . plus, UVA has a beautiful campus . . . and congrats on your acceptances!

Thanks on Chicago…

and congrats on your awesome acceptances as well. With your engineering GPA I'm sure you'll clean up.

UW

My choice is either between Oregon schools, or moving far, far away. Personally, moving to Seattle would be the same as moving across the country - and I could only justify a move of that magnitude with a T14 reputation. I did consider applying there recently, but it was after their deadline (Jan 1) so I gave up on that, lol.

Good to see another Engineering major on this site. We have almost identical profiles, EE major, 3.8ish GPA, low 170s LSAT, rejected at Stanford, in everywhere else so far. Good luck with Berkeley, that is also one of my top choices!

Hi Aiminghigh, Thanks for the comment on my page, right now I am waivering back and forth between Chicago and UT, not sure about Chicago's cutthroat reputation and would love UT, but don't necessarily want to go so much lower ranked... Good luck on Berkeley!

Thanks!

Thanks AimingHigh, and good luck with the rest of your schools. It looks like you have some good options lining up....engineers need to stick together ;)

Boalt is Killing Me
Wednesday, January 11 2006 at 07:00 PM

Hey, I've been complete at Boalt since 11/03. Do you think this is cause for concern? I'm really sweating this one as it's my first choice. When do you think it's time (if ever) to contact them to find out if I should have received some sort of response by now. I mean, 3 1/2 months is friggin ridiculous!!! Congrats on your other acceptances. You have some tough choices to make!

Thanks

Good luck to you too. I envy your LSAT score!!!

Thanks! I got a phone call yesterday that I missed and returned this morning...so I guess technically I got in yesterday (the 22nd). :-) congrats on everything so far - and good luck with Chicago.

NYU vs. Chicago
Thursday, January 26 2006 at 07:00 PM

Congrats on the acceptances. Quick question...why do you prefer Chicago to NYU? You mentioned you love it. Just curious as to why. Thanks.

Go Beavs!!

Maybe they just don't think you are cut out to be a duck? You wouldn't have gone anyway and you know it! :-)

WOW
Monday, March 07 2005 at 07:00 PM

I have similar #s and am REALLY surprised that Chicago waitlisted you. You should have been a solid admit. What's the deal? Oh man...I'm so worried now.

Yeah...
Friday, September 16 2005 at 08:00 PM

Yeah, the Chicago waitlist sucks - but I suppose I jinxed myself by visiting. I'm really thinking my LORs must've stunk - so don't lose hope, I'm sure something was just wrong with my app.

Ouch
Tuesday, November 08 2005 at 07:00 PM

Looking at all of today's waitlists at Chicago, I really have to wonder if this isn't yield protection... or something like it. Pretty much all of us are above one or both of their GPA/LSAT medians. I refuse to believe there is something wrong with my app! ;)

Chicago

Is a cold unfriendly town anyway. Virginia and Berkeley are much warmer. It's their loss!

Yeah...
Tuesday, November 08 2005 at 07:00 PM

I'm pretty sure I want to go into either government or public interest, so the strong LRAP programs at Columbia and NYU are looking pretty good right now, though $$$ could pretty easily sway me. Are you going to send any supplemental material to Chicago? The letter almost made it sound like a quasi-deferral, so if you let them know you're interested you'll probably get in before summer. That or I'm being irrationally exuberant.

Sunday, November 13 2005 at 07:00 PM

I got my call on the 22nd but missed it, so I found out I got in on the 23rd. Sorry to see that they put you on the waitlist. Best of luck getting accepted off of it.

Berkeley?
Monday, September 05 2005 at 08:00 PM

Why aren't you surprised? Your numbers look awesome, and apparently several excellent schools really liked your application.

Berkeley
Tuesday, January 17 2006 at 07:00 PM

Why did you call them? Did you get an email or something?

I followed your lead and called berkeley... and got them to reject me over the phone also. I blame you.

Are fools! What do they know. Do not discount U.VA, NYU and LC full ride! Those are great results and give you wonderful choices.

Why are you withdrawing from everywhere? Are you that disappointed in the cycle? :(
